PIKE COUNTY, Miss. —
A Pike County judge was attacked in a courtroom and it was all caught on camera.

The incident happened Jan. 7 during a hearing in Pike County Justice Court, according to the Enterprise-Journal.

Sidney Newsome, 27, went before Judge Aubrey Rimes in connection with a domestic violence charge.

The video has no audio, but it appears that Newsome argued with the judge as a bailiff tries to lead him away. Newsome lunged at Rimes, but was yanked away by the bailiff. Newsome threw a stack at papers at the judge as the bailiff worked to restrain him.

Rimes came from behind his desk and helped subdue Newsome, who was handcuffed and without shoes the entire time. A group of bailiffs entered the room and took custody of Newsome and a man the newspaper identified as Newsome's brother.

The judge didn't appear to be injured.

Judge moved pretty quick, none of the bailiffs or staff that came in to help look like they spend any time in a gym, look quite out of good physical condition, other than the judge.

If there was audio you would have heard "donuts are here" a second before the additional guards/bailiffs came through that side door.

Yikes. That bailiff is in some serious need of retraining in basic control techniques. Dude was cuffed and shackled, and she still couldn't get a handle on him. Rather, she was simply a bystander, clutching his shirt and along for the ride.

Any simple rear takedown (or probably even just getting him off balance) from her rear position would have ended that mess in an instant. She was basically in the perfect position, with a gift-wrapped subject, but clearly didn't know how to capitalize on it.

A lot of Texas judges I know have a pistola (or more) under their benches.

Good for this judge.

Bailiffs got those jobs because they are women. Fat out of shape women. That troglodyte should still be getting beat.

That was damn embarrassing!! I served as a court bailiff before and I would have leg swept that moron and bounced his head off the floor. We had them in leg and handcuff restraints in court (with a chain between the legcuffs and handcuffs) and there was many a time when I grabbed the chain and yanked them out of the courtroom. I’d grab that chain like a tug o war and RUN towards the holding cell... I always won Smile

I guess things are different in Miss. courts. Out hear on the West Coast, the defendant would have never even gotten in front of the table. We used to drop them all the time

Not a direct parallel, a few years ago there was a gang member in fed court (fairly buff, goodly sized fellow), on the witness stand was a fellow gang member, in prison outfit and cuffs. The gang member on trial grabbed his atty's pen, ran to stab the witness. The bailiff responded in a game-ending manner, trial is over, justice served.

A year or so later the deceased gang member's family filed a suit for excessive force. I think the trial didn't last long, the video was quite convincing.

I was going to say it looks like a requirement is to be a youngish overweight female minority. Eek

It appears she was in the process of escorting him out of the courtroom after his hearing, which apparently involves walking him between the table and the judge's bench and out through that brown side door. It's not like he jumped up from his seat at the table and ran past the table up to the Judge's bench. (Although judging by her performance, he could have had he wanted to.)

The moral of that video is don't have females, even heavy ones, in a job that may require violence.

Seems like brother/cousin/friend was trying to help restrain/calm him down. Hope he doesn't get in any trouble.

I understand and agree, perps don't honor gender.

Not to contradict, the circumstances were different. IIRC, the bailiff in the incident I mentioned above, was female. She saw an immediate threat, pulled the trigger until the threat was over, problem solved.

You may well be correct. And such "equity" measures will have ill consequences. Problem I see is many won't connect the cause with the effect.
