Experiences with Hardi-Plank or engineered wood like KWP or LP Smartside?
Fully expect my current house vinyl siding to be written off as hail damaged by my insurance. Considering options for replacement, hence the query here for counsel, advice, and wisdom. Big Grin

I've had Hardi on mine for about 15 years, so far just needs another coat of paint. Nothing really affects it, rain, hail, hurricanes.

Hardie Board here. 12 years old. No complaints, only recently had to paint since install (only because of fade, not peeling). Just make sure you go with an experienced installer.

Hardiplank here. Paint seems to last much longer compared to the LP product I had previously which failed.

I had my house resided with James Hardie fiber cement product, except for around my deck, which I had previously done with Louisiana Pacific Smart panels. Both products seem to be doing very well. No complaints.

Hardie here too for many years.
It is a big time product here in Houston and has been for many years.

I have Hardi-Plank on my last two homes. I prefer it to wood, vinyl, or aluminum siding.

Note that a pistol caliber bullet will penetrate it.

The one caveat is make sure you have an installer who knows how to correctly install the product. Our previous home was entirely done in HARDI PLANK, apparently a first for the builder. Nail it to deep and it'll easily crack and break off in chunks.

Our home is 20 years old and was clad with Hardi Board. It got a fresh coat of paint 4 years ago and has aged flawlessly. We’ve had one little chip due to improper nailing that was fixed with some epoxy. Our weather ranges from 95° to -20°. Highly recommend.

It was their wood composite siding product that was all the rage back in the 90's, which started delaminating and developing mold here in the PNW environment. When looking at it from the backside, it looked kind of like an OSB/Engineered type product. The layers started coming apart along the edges was one of the symptoms.

There was a class action lawsuit it had gotten so bad and occurred so often. We had received a settlement (which of course came no where close to paying for replacement, and only covered a portion of product replacement, no labor) and had the house redone with the Hardie Cement Fiber product.

Thanks Tony!

And to all those who have responded thus far. Much appreciated!

I'll also add the Hardie, while having that wood like texture, is a lot smoother finish than the LP is. The LP looked more rustic if that makes sense.

Question for those with Hardi. I have white marks on the side of mine where the sun hits that I would think is some type of mineral leaching through. Any experience on how to best deal with that?

We had Hardi siding installed when we remodeled 16 years ago. We will probably paint if next year, for the first time since it was installed.

We're deep into the process of having masonite siding and wood trim replaced with Hardie plank, shakes, trim, and soffit. The last of the new goes up Monday morning. I'm glad to hear the positive reviews. It looks amazing.

After researching installation best practices and watching the installers, I'm convinced that it's critical to find a crew that is very familiar with the product and its installation. If you go this route, be sure to read through installation best practices on the James Hardie website and force your installers to follow those guidelines to ensure there are no warranty issues later.

Hardieplank on a neighbors house that has worn very well over the past 10 years. Hardie now offers pre-painted planks which they claim lasts much longer than the unpainted planks you paint after install. Might be something to consider.
