Poor judgement has taken over football. I do not remember until recent years these idiot coaches losing games when their teams play their butts off only to have the coach piss a potential win out the window. KS vs TX is the latest version.
Lanning at Oregon did it against UW. There are numerous other examples.
What happened to take the points. Just dumb.

I think they do it more because games are generally higher scoring now. There aren't many 10-7 games anymore.

They are paid to make the difficult decisions. Sometimes it just doesn work out. That is exactly what they will say. It does make the game exciting. Who can forget the boring football of Woody Hayes. Three yards and a cloud of dust. The only excitement is when he punched a Clemson player.

Stupid is when ten seconds are left and you try for a field goal that is blocked and run back for a touchdown. That is a Nick Saban decision in a game against Auburn.

But when it works - They are the HEROS……

Analytics say win likelihood is increased by going for it more often. They have charts and guys in the box on computers telling them the odds. It's only a bad call when it fails. It's more than the math though. The coach knows if his D is gassed or if a particular matchup is favorable and takes that into account alongside the numbers. It's a much more exciting game when fourth and three doesn't always mean punt. Same with going for two.

Maybe coaches should just poll the fans at each down and see what their play call is.

With the changes to how the game clock runs this year, teams are not getting as many snaps.

So coaches make a decision as to how to try to keep the ball longer.

How else you going to get a 5th down?

Ha! Could you imagine a poll for every down or at least important situations? It’d be pretty fun experiment if the game didn’t mean anything just to show how often popular opinion of fans opposing the coach’s plans fails. The coaches have a hell of a lot more riding on it than fans, they have some tough decisions to make and sometimes shit don’t work out. If you replayed the same situation over 100 times, I’d take the coaches decision over fan decisions.

Always situational for sure. K State vs Texas as pointed out earlier by ORC was a shot by Kleiman to beat a way better team. I also didn’t agree with the decision however I can see the illogical logic. What is hard to understand is how teams with the best recruiting and money in the nation are in a position to lose to a team that doesn’t have two starters that could make their team…Just sayin.

It’s all analytics these days. If the numbers guy says 67% of 4th and two from your own 45 gets converted, they go.

If it says 33%, they punt.

Doesn’t make it right, but at D1 level ball, that’s how they usually decide.
