MutinyKilling Wolf Spider with fire-Man sets apartment on fire....
I guess he probably just wanted to be sure it was dead.
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018...artment-on-fire.html"A California man thought he nabbed a spider by setting it on fire on Sunday, but the eight-legged critter, while its body was engulfed in flames, ended up torching his apartment by scurrying on a mattress that quickly went ablaze.
An unidentified man who lived in a Redding apartment was trying to kill a “huge wolf spider” just before setting the apartment on fire, Lyndsey Wisegarver, who lived in the home, told Redding’s Record Searchlight. Wolf spiders are venomous insects that have hairy bodies and can be more than 1-inch long."

Freaking idiot! should have captured it and released it outside.

Yep, totally agree. For any spider, all options are on the table: running from the apartment screaming, fire, nuking the site from orbit, even (gasp)...using a 10mm.

flashguyI'm in the camp saying he should just have captured it and taken it outside. Wolf Spiders are not dangerous to adult humans, and they eat a lot of bugs.

BisleyblackhawkSmall juice glass put over spider...stiff thin cardboard slipped under glass...carefully pick up juice glass/offending spider/thin card board sheet as one unit...flip over so cardboard sheet is on top/spider is in bottom of glass...go to back door...release offending spider into the wild...
No fuss...no muss...no fire.
Note...it also works with scorpions as well

honestlouI'm not buying it. A spider, while on fire with enough flames to ignite a mattress, is still moving under it's own power? Nope. Dude just torched the mattress while going after the spider. Or just torched the mattress because they wanted to move.

45 CalThat is crazy.
I have them all around my place.they love the greenhouses and lay egg balls on the rafters.
Do not see the need to harm such a beautiful thing.

Of course. Such is always my course of action with most little critters.
We are joking when we say fire bombing one's home is a reasonable response to seeing a spider.

Spiders aren't insects. Who the hell wrote this story?
Also, like honestlou, I just don't buy it. The guy probably dropped his crack pipe or something.
I hate offended people. They come in two flavours - huffy and whiny - and it's hard to know which is worst. The huffy ones are self-important, narcissistic authoritarians in love with the sound of their own booming disapproval, while the whiny, sparrowlike ones are so annoying and sickly and ill-equipped for life on Earth you just want to smack them round the head until they stop crying and grow up.

egregoreEven a big wolf spider is maybe a little over an inch from leg tip to leg tip. Real dangerous.
Why not just step on it? Setting it on fire is not just ridiculous, but could be considered cruelty, even if it doesn't possess a nervous system to feel pain.

Mr.BrooksDitto what honestlou said. Actually he probably was getting stoned in bed and fell asleep. Remember it was a" positive incident." Just the type of renters a landlord dreads.

The Hell you say. Fire solves all problems. Especially bug problems.

According to the Internet, a large Wolf Spider can have a body as long as 2 inches, which would mean the size across the legs would probably be up to 4 inches. That's pretty big, but one is still not particularly dangerous.

BisleyblackhawkThis is the only wolf spider I would be concerned with...I might pass on the catch it in a glass trick and just offer it a piece of steak instead...
