This is nothing more than a little piece of interesting trivia. How the word "OK" became the most popular word in the world. This is the kind of information that I find fascinating. Perhaps in a hundred years, the world will wonder about the origin of "WTF" as an exclamation of bewilderment and disbelief. I'm not saying that the video is wrong, but in 1970, I asked my English teacher about the origin of the idiom, "Ok" or "Okay." He then gave me the assignment of finding out. There was no Internet then, so I had a time finding anything in the library with which to base my assignment. I was just about set to earn an F for the assignment when I finally stumbled onto something, and here it is: In the early days of our nation, there was a fellow named Kinderhook, and he was quite old. He achieved a high position in government, and every time there was a heated debate, you could depend on "Old Kinderhook" to just go along with the majority. After a while, it became an idiom to just refer to anyone who was easily persuaded as an "Old Kinderhook" or OK. There was a lot more to it - that's just the bare bones of what I read. It was 48 years ago, so that's about all I can remember. That is what was reported in one of my school's encyclopedias, anyway. I believe that was covered in the video. Old Kinderhook was the nickname for the 8th President of the U.S., Martin Van Buren, who was from Kinderhook, NY. The slang "OK" predated his election campaign a few years, so the campaign used it during his failed election campaign to establish a connection with Van Buren. Today we'd probably go with something like "OK is OK" on a bumper sticker or campaign slogan. However, it wasn't enough of a campaign slogan to overcome "Tippecanoe and Tyler, too." I thought it came from dockmasters inspecting cargo for the King of England,if accepted it was marked "accepted for transport on the Kings' ship". after a few years it was shorted to "on the kings ship", then to "OK". ___________________ ![]() "the world doesn't end til yer dead, 'til then there's more beatin's in store, stand it like a man, and give some back" Al Swearengen | |||
