Ran into this handsome guy or gal two blocks from my apartment. Seemed mildly concerned at first, but after a few soothing words went back to ignoring me.

You are not one of the neighborhood snacks, uh, I mean cats, that I was looking for.

That is a long hesitation before beating feet. That animal is dangerously comfortable around the neighborhood.

The 'yotes around here have zero fear of humans. Most of the time they stroll right by you and may barely make eye contact.

Here's an older (2002) picture of one riding a train in Portland. They are very adaptable to almost any environment.

We have plenty around here, around the neighborhood daily. They do not seem to linger in our community, more so use our washes for transit.

We live about a mile from the major north/south railroad, from PHX north to wherever. When a train passes and blows its crossing horn, the coyote pack starts a group howl, with howling, yipping, and other coyote noises. They are usually out in the desert near us, but the sound travels very well here in the desert.

I used to live in a part of the desert that was fairly built up, not really urbanized, but still with homes, businesses and a four-lane highway, and still saw coyotes a few times. One day a neighbor asked me if I'd seen her cat. "Sorry, I haven't seen it," I said truthfully, but left out the coyote sightings.

I have seen foxes kill cats. One foxes' den on my property had multiple cat remains.

I live in a city with a small lake bordering open space here in Colorado. Walking home from the neighborhood pub one evening near the lake and a 'yote walked around the corner of a building and walked down the sidewalk toward me. Passed by me 2' away with never a pause in its stride.

Yep. I had a pack around here messing with my chickens and yipping all night. I could see them on night vision but couldn't shoot. Then my thermal scope arrived. Big Grin

Used to be you could get $35/hide. Nobody buys them anymore though.

Come to think about it....

This particular one has been seen all around the town (it has a slight limp). Hangs out at McDonald's and Starbucks, and strolls through the Gilead campus.

That is one of the biggest reasons I encourage everyone I can to keep their kitties indoors if at all possible. A fella about 30 miles south of me in the Cullman, AL area had two outdoor cats, and one of them has been missing for just over 2 weeks now. I didn't say it to him (though I suspect he already knows it), but I highly suspect Miss Kitty became a snack for a coyote or two...
