rebut10I moved back to Mass a few years back to help out aging parents. I am near the Cape about 5 miles from the coast.
The gun laws here are confusing and I made the mistake of "unloading" several long guns I thought were not permitted here. As it turns out that was not really necessary for what I had.
IANAL but apparently, you can bring what you own when you move into the state and you MAY (not must) register them with the state.
There are 2 "pre bans" to deal with. The Sept 1994 ban, that now mostly deals with hi-cap mags, and the July 2016 ban "made up" (not actual law) by the state's AG which has to do with evil black rifles.
As stated in other responses, GOAL Mass is a good place to start for civil responses to your inquiries. The Northeast Shooters forum has lots of good info, if you do your research. The members on NES can be pretty salty if you ask questions without doing your "due diligence" before hand.
Best of luck with your decisions and the process.

SIGfourmeSignificant restrictions on what firearms are allowed in Massachusetts.
Given the location--near the Cape and the prospect of a rental property, I would keep the majority of your firearms and ammo in South Carolina.
No Hi cap mags, No AR type rifles.
Safe that will resist renters.
