Anyone even been? Just the Mrs. and I, no kids. Thinking late March early April maybe. With lots of places in Europe going to shit, how is this place regarding the safety of tourists, in particular, Americans? Any must see’s and do’s there? Boutique motels seem pretty reasonable, price wise. I guess I’d like to stay on the west side of the island to enjoy sunsets… Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks all.

My wife and I visited Malaga last spring. We found it and the surrounding area to be friendly, clean and safe. We did not get to Majorca but as a similar tourist area I would expect it to be similar.

Can't speak to current conditions, but we did a Palma port call in 1990 and it was fantastic. The only applicable advice I have is to find an area that caters to older couples who just want to get away. Magalluf was not that place when we were there. We learned that nothing in town opens until 10:00am at the earliest, and dinner doesn't really start until 8:00pm or later. Magalluf was a ghost town in the afternoon and early evening since most people were either at the beach or asleep getting ready for another all-nighter.

The guys who flew their wives over were advised to stay on the north side of the island, so that might be another location to research and consider. Good luck and have fun!

I was there also, Navy, late 80’s. I do know it’s a top notch party location, could be other things, as interested.

Nothing wrong with the idea, I’d put Iceland and Ireland on the list, if you haven’t been.

You're choosing the largest of the Balleric Islands so, you'll have a variety of towns & beaches to visit, good compromise between urban setting and nature activities. Ibiza is the party clubbing island, and Minora and Formentera are the two isolated beachy islands. You're pretty much going to find a lot of Brits and Germans traveling on vacation packages drinking their weight in alcohol and looking to hook-up. I enjoyed the historical stuff, Roman ruins, Old Town in Alcudia and Catedral de Mallorca in Palma.

Crime is pretty much confined to petty activity, the high traffic the areas the more you should make sure to zip-up your pockets and purses. The picture-taking scam is popular and you'll want to watch the taxi drivers on when they start the meter. Anti-tourism protests are largely confined to the cities, restaurant/hotel/shop keepers are battling with the negative activities the participants have been doing.

We went to Palma twice last year, just for the day on cruises. We just toured the Cathedral and the Palace there the first time and walked around the second time. Very pretty, good eats and friendly people. Tell your wife not to make eye contact with the African dudes selling fake purses

If you like to ride bikes, there are some seriously epic routes around the island. This is part of the Sa Colabra climb, which runs up from a seaside village on the northwest side of the island. We only spent one day their on a cruise stop. All we did was ride.

You can rent bikes, including eBikes, which makes the challenging climbs doable.

If interested, let me know, and I can give you the name of a top-notch outfit for rentals. That time of year, they may have some pro teams on the island training.

I worked on a Transfer Of Technology project in Barcelona for a year and a half in the late 1970s. Spent a couple long holiday weekends on Majorca. That long ago, don't remember too many details, other than it was much like a lot of Spain: friendly folks, great food, overall really nice.

Spent 2 weeks there on our Honeymoon in 2004. Beautiful and I would go back again. I don't know about safety/crime now, but I feel the same way when I think about potential trips out of the states.

Don't limit yourself to just the west side, it's easy enough to drive to most spots in a day. That's what we did.

Thanks guys. Sounds beautiful! It’s definitely on the short list. BigSwede, funny you mention those guys, they were on us like white on rice in Pisa Italy, no pun intended.
