Any other budding (like me) or accomplished wood carvers here ? I started carving a while back as a way to add interest to the furniture I make. Same reason I built a forge & dable in blacksmithing. But I think I enjoy wood carving more than anything else. Friends of ours own a winery, I decided to make a sign for them. I do not work fast as I'm always afraid of screwing it up. But I'm at the point where everything is roughed out & I can finally start cleaning it up.
Anyone else enjoy this hobby ?

That is really nice work. I wish I had the patience to go after projects that large.
I do enjoy whittling myself, and since I don't stop often enough to put a fresh edge on my blade, I have the scars to prove it. My whittling has produced a decent managerie of small critters that line the top of my wife's computer at work.

I took Carving classes from Bruce Downs in South Bend for a couple of years. He in turn had 10 years of classes under Georg Keilhofer from Frankenmuth. Georg passed away a number of years ago and Bruce eventually went out of business. As there was only a handful of students, tough to pay the bills. I enjoyed it, love looking at German carvings, I own quite a few. It just seemed like I got tired of it. I own lots of Carl Heidtman chisels, but haven't picked them up in years. I keep thinking that someday I will again. Yours look good. Relief Carving is probably the way to start. The three dimensional stuff is tough. I just never really got the talent it took to do it well. Good luck and keep up the good work!!

Grumpy, I am highly impressed by your work! The relief on the grapes and stem is excellent work... you should be proud of that piece!

Nicely done. You have more patience and talent than me.

Wow that came out great! My dad could do stuff like that (and building furniture, leatherworking, etc) but he didn't pass that gene to me.
