A good gear bag / Patrol bag.

A good first aid kit

A decent pen (scrap that idea if he's prone to losing stuff)

A good pair of boots go a long way!

A lot of great recommendations above. Cooler to help with meal prepping, a watch such as a Casio G Shock, sunglasses, and quality merino wool socks are notable. The book “Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement” might be something to think about as well. Only like $20. Congrats and good luck to him.

Do you know how much shit I gotta fix around here?
I have a ratty ass squad that smells of Harolds Fried Chicken and someone's nasty farts, pulls to the left, with 125000 miles on it. But at least the exhaust leak keeps a smile on my face. I'm fixing one of the other squad cars in some way at least once a week so we dont have to "down" them and wait for weeks to get them back over something simple.

The savages in the office can't help but accidentally break the chairs or desks or partitions that are probably older than them.

Then there's all the other stuff at their houses that I'm trying to teach them how to do on their own... "Hey Sarge, do you know the electrician is charging me $75 a piece to change light switches?"

"Fuck that, young Jedi! toss in a 12 pack for the next "Team Meeting"."

However, I will second your call on getting a small cooler! Try to get food at 2:00am on a Thursday. Wink

Lots of good suggestions.

I’ll second two of them and add another I didn’t see:

Write in the rain pocket notebooks and their black clicker pens. I’d get him a dozen of the notepads-the general use ones in black or brown or green, and two pens. He will use those all the time. I wish I’d had them the first ten years of my career. Absolutely worth the money.

The high quality portfolio is a great suggestion. I have two from Saddleback. Both are fantastic. A leather cover for his pocket notepads would also be a good idea, but the write in the rain ones are pretty sturdy without.

And 5 pairs of high quality socks. Unless he’s already wearing them, he has no idea the difference of a pair of high quality wool socks. I recommend Black full cushion crew.

Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here.

Although sometimes distracting, there is often a certain entertainment value to this easy standard.

CPD, that was great. I think you should write a book and I will be first in line to buy an autographed copy!
Stay safe

This, and believe it or not a built in compass. You would be surprised at its value.

I never been in a police station where I'd worry about.my wallet. But, leave a great piece of gear around unguarded, it"a gone.

My grandson is entering the academy within a matter of days and I'm facing the same choices (assuming he makes it to graduation). I know from personal experience that firearms polices and advancements in the technology change over time, so that even if I were to get him the "latest/greatest" that would be in policy, he may want to get something new in the not too distant future for on-duty or off-duty. With that in mind, I noted that a few of my LEO friends were gifted Rolex watches that they may or may not have worn daily (or at all while at work), but treasured these timepieces through their career and long afterwards. I'm leaning towards a Submariner (without the date complication) and though my grandson's projected graduation date isn't until early next year, I know that patience is needed to find a new one at an AD (Authorized Dealer) to get the regular retail (best) price.
