Old fashion office chairs

gjgalliganOld fashion office chairs
Anybody know of any chairs that do NOT use the air lifts on them?
I just want the old style that you spin to raise/lower.
Air cylinders never seem to hold up very long.

4MUL8RThe Army Navy surplus store in Richmond VA has old chairs. Check your local thrift stores, often when folks pass away the furniture makes its way to the thrift store.
Don't forget if the chair is old enough to have screw lift, it is old enough to FAIL safety standards. The chair will most likely have only four legs, and these are well known to create head injuries as people lean back and the base scoots out from underneath the seat.
If you are trying to solve a problem of poor quality gas lift chairs, please think about purchasing quality chairs. Lazyboy has a chair for $440. The gaming chairs for the kids are often set up well and higher quality. Costco has a chair bulked out for $140.

sig2392Try your local craigslist or facebook market place.
If you get a named brand office chair, it is unlikely to ever break.
I am partial to Herman Miller, but steel case is another very good brand I have used.

SchmelbyI bought a lazyboy chair from Costco many years ago. It's a great chair except for the airlift.
I decided a couple days ago I'm going to turn it upside down and drill a few holes in the cylinder and put screws in to keep in the full upright position. I'll let you know how it goes when I get around to it!

abnmacvGot two great wooden chairs, solid and wide enough for most anybody's butt. Came from a public library "upgrading."

konata88I would second the quality chair route, unless you've already been buying quality chairs. Something like the Herman Miller Aeron or Steelcase Series 1 (several other brands as well but I have first hand experience w/ both of these). YMMV but these have latest 10-20 years of daily use for me. Built like a tank and comfortable to sit for hours on end.
And made in a first world country (ie - USA or other).
Also, at least around here, they are readily available through craigslist (new surplus or business downsizing). With a little patience, a new one can be had for about $600.
One caution: if you go this route and buy in the open market (instead of authorized retailer) be careful w/ counterfeit chairs. Go to H-M website to learn how to distinguish real from fake.

Sorry - I just saw your post. I basically had the same opinion.

220-9erI've had an Aeron that's been going for well over a decade and is still going strong and looks like new.

ZSMICHAELI am happy with my refurbished Steelcase chair. It was expensive but works well. Herman Miller is another possibility. Get ready to open your wallet.

+1
Just like many things in life, it is best to buy & pay once and cry once. Herman Miller is pricey brand new, but there are a lot of used ones that will last for years.
