She was really lucky. A good example of CCW saving the day?
Not in my opinion. An example of off body carry being almost, almost worthless. Luck saved her when he accidentally dropped his knife.
Otherwise we may have never heard her side of the story.

Good for her.

Brings to mind the saying about not messing with people that are too old to fight.

Not a great CCW story but a good "armed citizen story."

I carry IWB 4-5 o'clock and would have similarly been unable to readily access the weapon while driving until the perp was distracted.

But, I suppose I would have been able to draw on him right after the kick in the chest.

Unless your gun is already in your hand, I'm not sure there is much you can do until there is an opening.

Yeah, I'll bet she starts carrying on her person from now on. I keep a 9mm in my console because I can't get to my carry gun that is on my hip fast enough to stop an attempted car jack. I know it sounds like I'm paranoid but it's nothing more than cheap insurance.

If she didn't have that gun she'd likely be dead. Did she get lucky? Yes. Did she create some of that luck by having a firearm? You bet. I say good for her. Glad she's okay.

South park mall was a dump even back when I was still in the area.
Glad the woman was armed and kept her wits about her. Hope they don't go easy on the guy. He racked up some serious felonies there

As she is an out-of-stater now, she can't legally ccw in IL. Granted, she hadn't exited the vehicle yet from the sound of it

You read my mind. Unless she had secured an IL permit even the console carry was probably not "legal" in IL. It's one of those F'd up states that doesn't recognize any others permits. Outside of this situation if she were stopped on a normal traffic stop she could have easily ended up in a NY or NJ situation where she may be facing charges. Glad she is safe.

The inept bumbling fool dropping his weapon and her luck in being able to get her firearm is what kept her alive.

People are not cats, and only with sheer luck, land on their feet when they fall from a dangerous height.

But they seem to think they have control, when they only were fortunate to have lived to tell the story.

It is a far great divide between deliberate and calculated response and winning a coin toss.

430 ILCS 66/40(e) says a non-resident in IL can transport a concealed firearm in their vehicle.

The linked article says she kicked the guy in the chest and pushed him. My interpretation is that she exited the car at the mall when the guy first approached.

First, I did search for and looked through the law. As one would expect, pages of legalese. But what I read does seem to indicate that an out of state CCW can transport through IL. I had always thought that it was like traveling through CA. Weapon unloaded, locked away and not accessible.

Do we have any IL LEO's who are familiar with the practical application of the current law in IL?
We have family on the IL boarder that we visit regularly so this is of significant interest to me. I've always errored on the side of caution. But that could just be me being over cautious having grown up in that repressive regime.

That's pretty much what I was thinking for her. At a minimum, one gut shot to ensure the police had a shorter trail to follow.

If memory serves me right, Port Byron is about 15 miles away, and many stoplights away from where it all began in Moline.

The woman was able to keep her composure and wits about her while driving, probably going over different scenarios in her head. Thankfully, an opening appeared.

Hope she heals up quickly.

I've read an IA permit holder (like me) can carry concealed thru IL as long as we stay in the car. I think you're GTG as your trip ends on private property.

Found it:

http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/illinois.pdf

[I]430 ILCS 66/40

(e) Nothing in this Act shall prohibit a non-resident from transporting a concealed firearm within his or her vehicle in Illinois, if the concealed firearm remains within his or her vehicle and the non-resident:
(1) is not prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm under federal law; (2) is eligible to carry a firearm in public under the laws of his or her state or territory of residence, as evidenced by the possession of a concealed carry license or permit issued by his or her state of residence, if applicable; and
(3) is not in possession of a license under this Act. If the non-resident leaves his or her vehicle unattended, he or she shall store the firearm within a locked vehicle or locked container within the vehicle in accordance with subsection (b) of Section 65 of this Act. I brought this to the attention of a neighbor lady , she said that 50% of the women she knows
would read about this and never, ever consider taking a gun class , a gun safety class, a self defense class and still would not consider carrying a gun.

Our wonderful government, releasing a mentally ill violent felon into our communities. They'll say they've done their part.

We need to be prepared to do ours, if need be.
