If properly trained, the dog is trained to hold his quarry. You get seriously injured by fighting or attempting to get away from the dog. The yelling usually tells the handler the dog has a catch and he must get there and take the dog into control. If you continue to resist, you are going to get torn up. Also note that the dogs are taught in training to attack the gun, which is why I think so many of them are killed.

That is the question.

Do my best to kill it. I follow the law and am not a criminal, I will not abide an animal attack on me.

If my dog is home, it is a dog fight and I shoot the dog attacking my dog.

If not I give the dog my right arm and shoot with my left.

I have done nothing to warrant a dog attacking me in my home.

I then hire a lawyer assuming I survived.

I have no idea if the k-9 handler would shoot me.

A couple months ago we were treating a local k9 that had ingested a foreign body he could not pass. Several days after the surgery while the handler waited in the reception area, my wife was removing the dogs iv so it could go home. Out of the blue the dog latched on to her arm and started shaking her like a rag doll, she's tough but yes she screamed like a little girl and I came running.

By the time I got there the dog we guess realized he screwed up and let go and was just sitting there. Both my wife and the tech there had been told the release command but in the stress of the situation neither used it. My point being is that anyone that thinks, even if they are armed, they're going to shoot the dog, you are dreaming.

Luckily even against the handlers wishes my wife did not have to go to the hospital. She does have a scar that will be there for life and a promise that if the handler doesn't keep him when he retires she gets first dibs since they're blood brothers now.

I am amazed by the responses so far. I realize this is a tiny sample size, but the stats are undeniable.

Most of our SIGforum membership would use armed resistance against a K-9 that was holding/munching on them. I did not expect that. I thought most of us would not resist.

Many of us would expect the K-9 handler to shoot us if we killed the K-9. I did not expect that.

The vast majority of us have followed the rules of this thread and behaved in a civil fashion. I did not expect that either.

Fascinating.

H&K, I believe the crux of the question is you do not hear LEO commands to come out, do not know it's a K9 dog and, have not done anything to suspect the dog isn't anything but a strange dog entering your place and attacking you.

If one knows he’s dealing with a police K-9, and he has the presence of mind to do so, holding still and not resisting is probably the best bet. The knowing it is a police K-9 and having the presence of mind to not resist with 700 psi of force clamping down on some part of you body are the questions.

In the class when we got our dog, it was made very clear that your dog is your partner, same as a two legged partner would be. If a suspect is beating on your partner, you jump in and beat the shit out of him until he stops. If a perp uses deadly force against your partner, well ...

A previous poster talked about shooting the dog and hoping he could drop the guy before the handler showed up. While *knowingly* shooting a police officer be they two or four legged seems to be a highly questionable strategy, having empty hands when the armed two legged police officer shows up is clearly a good plan.

Kinda sad that it was unexpected. Glad it happened.

LS1 GTO, please read my comment of yesterday.

This very basic, simple scenario I postulated was to provide a scenario we could all imagine happening, even if it required a little imagination.

I just as easily could have said, "you're walking on a path in the woods in a park, and a Police K-9 runs to you and bites you. What do you do???"

This is immaterial anyway since the question is not about any of these things or details.

No matter what the Eleventy Bazillion possibilities and circumstances that could go into the bite actually happening, You find yourself being bitten by a Police K-9.

Do you offer no resistance (probably screeming like a nine year old girl like I would be doing), some resistance (physical resistance), or even armed resistance (Deadly Force)?

That is the question.

So the answer to your statement is pretty much no. No matter how the Police K-9 finds itself attached to you, what do you do?

But thanks for your response.

Also, this question is in direct correlation to the fact that I have observed increased Police K-9 shootings in my area. I do not believe there to be a circumstance in which I would ever shoot a Police K-9, but many here do.

Interesting thread and informative. I had no idea that police dogs were feared to this extent.

Is it illegal to defend yourself from a K9 officer?

Look at it this way. If a police officer, for no reason known to you, starting attacking and beating you, would you not defend yourself? Why would a K9 be any different?

Really? So you've got a dog that can grab both my arms at the same time when they're 3 feet apart? No, I'm not dreaming and I'll shoot the dog.

Edited to add: just remembered that the Green Berets in Jungle Warfare school taught us how to kill dogs that come after us.

I love dogs, but I would do my best to shoot it. My best might be crying like a girl on the ground. In my day, dogs that randomly attack people got put down. I can’t comprehend anything else.

If I realized it was a police dog, I would try to stay still. My understanding is that, in general, if you stop fighting, they stop tugging. If I didn’t realize it was a police dog, I’d probably defend myself with whatever was at hand.

That said, we own a German Shepard, so having a fur missile barrel into our bedroom and land on my nuts when it jumps onto the bed wouldn’t seem that out of place!

I cannot envision a scenario in which a police dog would have any reason to enter my house, especially without warning. Should a strange dog invade my house and attack me, or my family, I will take immediate and drastic action.

I love dogs. I love my family members more and will defend myself and those family members with whatever is necessary to end the danger.

I imagine I would be able to identify it as a police K9, and if so, I would NOT fight the dog. I assume they are not trained to KILL, but rather to detain. If that's the case, I would do my best to detain myself and try to allow the dog to chew or hold on a part that's less life threatening, like a foot or knee, vice my neck, face, or hands. Followed by plastic surgery and filing for damages. Either that or get shot followed immediately by a trip to the hospital or the morgue, more likely the latter. So I would prefer to live, with damages, than die with damages. It's logical. Perhaps not so simple in practice, but makes sense to me. Fighting a police K9 would be like jumping fences in peoples' back yards with a police helicopter spotlight shining 2 million lumens of light on the trashcan you climbed into. I don't see any upside running from police or attacking their K9s, which has the same consequences as attacking a human officer. Simple logic.

I'm a little disappointed that so few LEOs have posted in this thread. There insight would be invaluable. It would be fascinating to see this question worked on by those on the other side of the equation.

Any LEOs in the house?
