Virginia Congressman Gerry Connolly has been diagnosed with cancer.

In an open letter to his constituents Thursday, the 74-year-old Democrat said he has cancer of the esophagus. Connolly added he has no symptoms aside from intermittent abdominal pains and will be undergoing chemotherapy right away.

“Cancer can be tough. But so am I,” Connolly said. “I will attack this the only way I know how – with Irish fight and humor.”

On Tuesday, Connolly, who was first elected to Congress in 2008, secured a ninth term in office. Connolly represents Virginia’s Congressional District 11, which includes parts of Fairfax County as well as Fairfax City.

The congressman did acknowledge that his treatment could affect him on the job.

“Over the next few months as I do my job here in our district and on the Hill, I may be a bit fatigued due to the treatment,” Connolly said. “I hope you’ll understand.”

My father in law died from esophagus cancer and rather quickly.

That killed my brother. Lasted about 6 months from diagnosis having the best medical care available. Esophageal cancer patients don't have a good track record for surviving it.

I am sorry he has cancer, but that was a total dirtbag move. Maybe VA's governor will appoint the Republican candidate to fill his spot when he is forced to step down, or kicks the bucket.

To paraphrase Milo Yiannopoulos, Connolly IS cancer.

Cancer is not a death sentence. The stage of cancer was not disclosed nor his family history. We are not talking brain cancer and I personally know of many people who never miss a day of work,while they undergo chemotherapy.

My mother in law died of esophageal cancer. She had surgery and chemo but it came back. After suffering through the treatment the first time, she decided she couldn’t go through it again and gave up. Very sad.

He's a U.S Congressman. The governor does not make appointments for members of the House of Representatives. There would have to be a special election.

Well, of course, he's a liberal democRat.

My dad died from that in 1967. Start to finish not quite nine months. Post surgery he lived about ten days.

Connolly is an ass.

Cancer has a better win record that’s for sure.
