I used to crew on ocean sailboats in the 80’s and the grinders on our boats were almost always college football players, linebackers mostly.

Could it be weight related with these modern boats? Linebackers make great movable ballast as well as grinders. Looks like everybody is inside these boats with nobody sitting on the rails.

I’m guessing a smaller, lighter person saves not only body weight, but also gear and food.

Modern capstan technology does not require the strength to operate them as they did decades ago.

Some now have electronic and/or hydraulic assist.

At 3:06 on shows the grinders tightening the sheet just like we did “decades ago” .
