I prepped my taxes as usual and began to e-file them. I needed a state ID to file. I got out my driver's license. No love there, it expired in January. I got out my CCDW (concealed carry permit) and discovered it had expired in January as well. I got out my LEOSA card. Surprise! January expiration. So, as of last week, I have no valid ID with which to purchase a gun. I scheduled an appointment at the driver's license place-MARCH 18! So, I cannot legally purchase a gun at a gun store right now. I have feelers out at several LGS for specific guns from the past I want? Guess who keeps calling? Yeah, I've got 3 on lay away for now.

Thanks for reminding me to check mine. All good until July of next year.

You need an appointment to renew your DL? What kind of bureaucratic bullshit is that? Here I can walk in any time they're open and be out the door in under 15 minutes with a temporary card. The actual ID card shows up in the mail a week or two later.

Apparently the OP doesn't get a mailed notice. I got them for both my DL and CCW. (Since 2020, an "enhanced" CCW.)

Not as bad as having to show your birth certificate and other documents - the same ones you showed to get the previous license. In 2020, anticipating some air travel that didn't materialize, I changed my DL to "Real ID" (which also didn't materialize) with no other changes. The clerk barely even glanced at my documents.
As for making appointments, it helps a little bit - a very little bit - with a large busy DMV.

According to this link you 'may' be able to renew online but 'may' also have to have proof of a vision test...
As an aside, I have all my renewal dates (DL, CHL, passport, etc.) as calendar entries on my PC with a 6 month alert. In fact, I just put in an orthopod follow-up appointment reminder for 2029.

We have a choice here. You can just walk in, take a number, and wait your turn. Better bring a sandwich and a couple books to read.
Or, you can use the website to make an appointment (usually available same day or next business day), show up per the appointment, and get your business* taken care of promptly.*The county tax collector's office handles property taxes, vehicle title and registration, driver licenses, and concealed weapon permits. All documents, such as licenses, registration, weapon permits, are generated on the spot, so no waiting for these to arrive in the mail.

Here you can walk in and take a number, or make an appointment. My method used to be go grab a number, go get lunch, then go back after lunch. In other words, do something “productive” instead of waiting there.
But we now have third party vendors with much less wait time; pay a small surcharge I think. If you go to them at the right time it’s 15 minutes or less.
Lastly, and this could help somebody, since it’s a state drivers license you can go to any office statewide. I used to drive 10 minutes across the river to a much smaller office, which was usually much less busy.

In NH everything expires on your birthdate; DL, CCW, Vehicle Registration…Everything! It was an odd concept when I initially moved to the Granite State, but ultimately I ‘really’ like it. It's not like you can forget your birthdate, and in the case of the DL and your CCW, both are valid for 5 years, plus they are synchronized together, so they both expire on the same date! Basically you just need to keep track of what year they expire. Live Free or Die!

An advantage of a smartphone. I set calendar dates for both the dates of expiration of such things and another for a month in advance.
Since I can renew my CPL for up to three months in advance: I set one for that, as well.

The numbers are shown on a screen along with which window to go to, like "J42, Window 7" -- they do give you a few minutes to get to the window.

I keep my chequebook on a spreadsheet, and on another sheet keep recurring items in a chronological list. Monthly stuff is easy to remember, every year or five years stuff is hard adding the year they are due helps. Every month I look at the recurring list for that month and check off tasks until I am done. Its great for my car registrations or passport every ten year type of stuff. Come December I just clear all the marks and start over. Get a new card, registration, or permit, just add it to the list.
I suppose I could write it on a sticky or notepad, but I always know where the computer is. I might lose my cellphone so I dont really keep a lot of pers info on it.

My coworker let his expire. He made an appointment and still spent 5 hours getting his new license. The license branches are choked with foreigners getting ID or DL. I’ve seen it myself and my friends recent CDL circus was the same.

Appointments for DL renewal here are still six to eight months out. People are driving considerable distances (100 miles) to small towns to be able to get in.

In Tennessee’s we now have self service kiosks if you want to use the same picture and also self service kiosks where you can take a new picture. You leave with a paper license and your new license arrives in about 3 weeks via US Mail. It was extremely easy and did not have to wait.
