It's a town of 1400 people. They are cash-poor. Do you actually think this woman thought up this scheme? Knowing the PD would resign and the story would go national? She's truly brilliant, isn't she? To be able to get things to this spot, she must be able to see the future. The reality is that this woman had no idea what was going to happen when she accepted the job. | |||

Maybe she wanted to reduce/eliminate the police force from the beginning, be it agenda driven or budget driven.. Read that the County Sherriff will take over the job. Appears they just saved the city some serious expense, labor, insurance, health insurance, cars, liability exposure, could write the county a check for 50% of the local force budget and come out ahead.. Could have been the plan all along, the whole force leaving, just eliminated all potential of a lawsuit.. Or maybe not... | |||

No, sir, I don't think she went in with the intent to rid a town of its entire PD and then crush the town economically. There are certainly better-funded targets. I do, however, believe there's an insurance company behind even a tiny town, and that a tiny town can be a much easier system to disrupt than a large one. Further, I believe that people in situations/positions like hers often take on a "you can't touch me, I'll sue" stance in life, particularly when things don't go the [possibly altruistic] way they expect. In NC Towns with a council/manager style of government the manager works for and at the pleasure of the council. All public employees in NC are considered "at will "employees. They could probably fire her with cause but she can sue no matter what also. | |||

So the flip side of that coin- The County Sheriff takes over. The Sheriffs Office needs 5 more deputies to patrol the new area. Someone's paying for that. (Everyone in the County) The Sheriffs Office gets sued for an incident that happens on the other side of the County. Guess where some of that money is coming from? Yup' The tiny lil town of Kenly. Potential for a lawsuit? Granted, probably the largest potential for a lawsuit would be coming from a Police Department, but that doesn't get your liability down to zero. Also, the Police Force quit. Bigger government(Sheriff) doesn't do it cheaper. Here in SLC a bunch of smaller towns contracted with the larger SL county Sheriff's office to police their new cities and townships as they formed. Within a decade they all left and started their own police departments because of cost. Every mayor wants to be able to get a speeding complaint and then call the police and have a cop car on the street tomorrow running radar. They will be back down the road when they realize the control they lose and when the Sheriff starts increasing the costs. | |||
