TMats,

Still considering the Cayenne, but it's becoming unlikely. Hard to justify spending ±$30k for a 5-6 year-old vehicle with ±80k miles on it, no matter how nice a vehicle it is.

valkyrie1,

When you suggest "stay away from 04 years," do you mean years evenly divisible by four (leap years), years ending in "04" (e.g.: 2004) or all years ending in "4?"

It may be moot. There are very, very few used Touaregs to be found

Have since looked at and pretty much discarded the idea of a Toyota 4Runner. Now entertaining the idea of a Jeep Grand Cherokee--which, oddly enough, does't appear to usually come with a trailer hitch? Unless you go with the Overland trim package, which gets kind of spendy.

I have owned a few Euro cars. Volvo and VW. Repairs became exorbitant on all. Went to Toyota 4Runner 4 years ago and haven't looked back. At least check one out before you buy, you might be surprised. No it's not sporty but it is comfortable and very useful for all the things I do.

Decision made.

Decided to go look at a gray Jeep Grand Cherokee that checked all the boxes... you know... just to see.

It checked all the boxes and then some. I am now (or soon will be) the proud owner of this

2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. Has a mere 23,600 miles on it.

I liked everything about it. Fit me like a glove. All the controls, everything, were where they needed to be. Ride was firm, but not raw. Steering was tight and responsive. Handling was nothing short of terrific.

As the sales dude came back with the fob for the test drive, he said, you know it has a

in it?

No, I did not Big Grin

Started that bad boy up, listened... I'm surprised I didn't start drooling Razz

Took it for a good, thorough test drive and that was that. I was in love. This SUV is exactly what I was seeking when I started this thread about the Porsche Cayenne.

Funny story. As we parked back at the dealership my wife said "I wonder what the average mileage is?" Went poking around. For that jaunt: 13.8 MPG. She freaked. "Honey," I said, "we sat here for 15-20 minutes with the engine running, checking stuff out and talking to the salesman, then I took it out and immediately started putting that Hemi to work." She was doubtful. "Ok," I said, "another test ride." Went out and drove it another 6-8 highway miles, acting responsibly. 20 MPG.

Congrats. The GC is a great vehicle. I had a 2012 for three very trouble free years and only traded it as I needed a truck. I'm seriously considering going back to the GC next year.
Compared to the two BMW's I had before the GC it was fantastically reliable and everything worked as advertised which was a nice change.
I'm sure you will enjoy yours.

Hope you really like your Jeep, Ensigmatic. My wife drives a 2012 Jeep Wrangler that she bought new and absolutely loves the thing. In order to appreciate that you’d have to know that she used to drive 30 miles to Jackson Hole Airport for work. She had to be at the airport at 0430 year-round—out before the snow plows. It kept her safe. If you like this Grand Cherokee HALF as much as she loves this Jeep, you’ll be really satisfied with your purchase.

Just make sure that all the recalls have been made. The shifter issues and I believe some had some computer/electrical issues. My friends would have so seizures where all the electricals would flicker and spaz our. He couldn’t even get it towed properly since the shifter is electronic. He had to have a flat bed come pick it up. Think his was a 2014.

Thanks, kxc223 & TMats. This will be the newest vehicle, with the lowest mileage, I've owned since I bought my Honda Accord hatchback brand new in... 1987? Also the first vehicle with "muscle" I've owned since my 1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass. First MoPar ever for me.

Dusty78, thanks for the caution. The shifter thing is all about user error, so I'm not too concerned about that. Looking at the Carfax report I'd say it looks like the PO kept up on the recalls, of which there've been only four. I will, of course, ask the dealership to ensure it is up-to-date on them all.

This Jeep has such low mileage the dealer's giving us a lifetime powertrain warranty, and it still has 12 months or 12,000 miles left on the manufacturer's warranty. So we should be in pretty good shape.

Only thing I'm not certain about is what to do, if anything, about the after-market active trailer brake controller the PO added. It's not really in the way (mounted under the dash just right of the steering wheel), but I'll almost certainly never use it. So I'm not sure whether to ask the dealer to remove it, or leave it be.

Enjoy. You should be able to take the aftermarket trailer braking module off yourself, if it's an eyesore or in the way.

It's likely just screwed in place then just unplug the wire harness.

Of course the dealer should be happy to remove it too.

Congratulations on the GC Limited!

Being a Porsche guy I went through the exact same journey as you did and ended up with a GC Limited as well! Mine is the diesel.

Even after almost 45K miles it still drives very tight with great brakes and tranny (the V8 you have and my diesel share the same 8 speed tranny, the 6 cylinder has a different one that is not as reliable).

You made a great choice!

Ah, lucky you Smile. All the low-end torque and great mileage. Only minus I've heard is they're kind of noisy at idle.

I would have gone diesel if I could have found one. Dealer sales guy said they're scarce. I believe it. Not a single listing in my year/mileage/etc. range was a diesel. Even stretching to 100 mile radius, just out of curiosity.

This beast is going to get about 1 MPG less than my TrailBlazer and mid-grade is about 10-12% more expensive Frown At least the power-to-weight ratio won't put it in muscle car status, so the insurance hit shouldn't be too bad.

Like I wrote, earlier: I didn't even realize the vehicle we were going to look at had a Hemi until the sales guy told me. We were just there to kind of see what JGCs were like. But once I heard that engine start up, then drove it... *sigh*... I was done for Razz

I was actually having some second thoughts, today. My wife talked me out of that. What a woman.

They do seem to hold up well, from what I've been reading.

In 2014 they switched to the 8-speed in all GCs.

Good luck with the GC.

I love my 4.7L WJ. It's a 2000 Laredo and has been fantastic. Only real repair was the heater core, and it's now at 180k miles. Just did the CV half shafts this week. For the first time.

Welcome to Jeep ownership!

I had a touareg right out of the gate. Big mistake. I know I know... The dealer seemingly had it in his garage more than I did. Lots of electrical issues... primarily with the air suspension. V8 was nice. Solid. Yes but it guzzled gas for such a small vehicle. I eventually traded it in on a Volvo and never looked back.

You can do better and I think the Grand Cherokee IS better. Especially with the HEMI. Great engine!

You have chosen well.

Just to set the record straight the transmission that is in the V6 GC is the 845RE which is a ZF original design BUT built by FCA and they have been having issues.

The transmissions in the V8 and diesel GC's is the 8HP70 which is actually designed built by ZF to handle the additional torque of these engines and they have been bullet proof.

Regarding the brake controller- there is a knee airbag down there. The door is plainly visible. I’d make sure it isn’t going to become a missile if the airbag deploys. I got a 2017 in March. Love it so far but I only have the V6. Jealous of the V8. Haha.

I knew about the airbag. I did plan to tell the dealership to ensure that wouldn't be a problem.

I may still ask them to remove the device. Like I said: I don't see myself ever towing anything big and heavy enough to require it.

Yeah, that Hemi's gonna be fun Smile Just gotta be careful there's not too much fun.

Congrats on the new vehicle!

I had pretty much written off Jeeps from my "want" list... until last year when we were in the Austin/San Antonio area for a week and the car rental place upgraded me to a 2016 Grand Cherokee. While it didn't have the V8, I was really impressed with that vehicle. That was one really sweet machine.

If you read the thread you saw all I thought I wanted was a Porsche Cayenne. Then looked at something else. Then something else. Then...
Jeep was entirely off my radar. When I got to about the third or fourth consideration, and articles again suggested "But you should really consider a Jeep Grand Cherokee, instead, because..." Finally: <exasperated sigh> "All right, already! I'll look at the !@$!#!! Jeep Grand Cherokee!"

Same here. I was taken completely by surprise by how that Jeep handled. I kind of expected it to handle like a boat, which is a bit >< how my TrailBlazer handles. Not at all. I'd say it's probably the tightest ride I've had since the Accord.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."
