Thank you Very little |
Robotics have already replaced plenty of the automotive workforce, Henry Fords assembly line now looks like what we predicted the future would be, less humans, more robots.

I've spent most of my career in automation. I can tell you for a fact that for many tasks a robot or other automated equipment can perform faster and more accurately than a human. The video above of the automated welding line is a good example, although that is faster than real time. Conversely, there are many tasks that no one can do better than a human. The human brain is a learning machine that performs millions of minute calculations per second and makes decisions that machines are not able to yet. There needs to be balance. AI is a bit scary. There are doors that are often opened, even in conventional automation that were not anticipated. I've seen a few that were advantageous, and some that were not. The same people calling for a moratorium on AI are also investors in AI companies. You think Musk doesn't develop/use machine learning or neural networks in his businesses? Don't make me laugh. Technology will march on...

I wonder if you realize how soon it will come that this statement might be taken quite literally.

One wonders what AI might learn from watching Terminator. How to avoid the mistakes of Skynet. "Wrong does not cease to be wrong because the majority share in it." L.Tolstoy "A government is just a body of people, usually, notably, ungoverned." Shepherd Book

I made this last night in 30 seconds with a short prompt. The stuff AI creates is nuts, I can make a factious person that looks like an award winning photograph with a few lines of text if I want. I even have one AI writing prompts to feed into a different AI to optimize the prompts for whatever I want it to generate. Jesse Sic Semper Tyrannis

The problem is that no creator of a work of art and no author of a piece of writing or music will be able to escape scrutiny and suspicion that their work is partially or entirely generated by AI. An artist, when creating, will be required to sit in a room in front of multiple live cameras, all but naked in order to claim legitimacy of their work, and even the feed from those cameras will be suspect. Speech writers will use this stuff. School kids will use it. College students will create term papers and their thesis with its aid. Original thoughts will vanish. Slowly, the people of this world will become stupid, lazy and enslaved, and please don't try to be clever by saying that this is already happening. You know what I am saying. People will become so dependent upon this technology that after a couple of generations, they will no longer think for themselves, not even the best of them. The third-world savages will not suffer these ill effects and they will overrun the civilized world and Earth will enter a period that will make the Dark Ages seem like a Sunday Social. I am grateful that this is not my problem, but I welcome the opportunity before I go, to push a few robots off of tall buildings, drop them in vats of acid, set them ablaze or destroy them in car-crushing machinery. The sons o' bitches who created these technologies should have predicted the things to come, but no, they worship at the altar of the almighty dollar. They should be the first ones to be taken by their creations or by the people whose lives they will destroy in a few short years.

I was just thinking this. I'm glad I'm the age I am. I do not think....or at least hope it won't get totally out of hand by the time I leave this earth. Maybe I too can contribute to screwing up some of what's coming after us.

I thought it was a huge advancement when I got my first color TV, this was after I was Married. I was fairly early adopter of home computers, PC and Mac both, Cell phones and had the first Cable Internet connection in the county (volunteered to be hooked up even before official release by a trainee). I love my smart phone. I also hold an Amateur Radio license. But I think I"m about done with bleeding edge technology. I just spent 5 days with my bank trying to get my new credit card to work... I shudder to think what lies ahead when it goes wrong. We can't protect from hackers now! Collecting dust.

I realize that social media empowered AI is already creating fools in our society and their danger here & now is far more dangerous than some "awakening" of machines in the near term.

Still finding my way |
My fear is there will be nowhere to hide or seek privacy from any of this in the very near future. Big brother is already everywhere.

These robots will be able to run far faster than us, possibly at speeds approaching that of automobiles at the pace of street traffic. They will be able to "see" heat, meaning they will be able to see through walls. They will be able to see in total darkness. They will have amplified hearing. They will be a strong as ten men and will be resistant to gunfire. They will have incredibly quick reflexes and think hundreds of times faster than humans. They will be able to swarm a target in coordinated attacks. They can't be drowned. They will be unconstrained by morality and will follow their programming and will be unswayed from achieving their objective. They will be able to jump incredible distances and they will never, ever experience fear. And that is just for starters.

Machines can do things man cannot, with incredible effects, and have been doing so for centuries. Neuromorphic computing will be the next-gen computing platform after Von Neumann architecture, the low-hanging market sector being sensor related (optics first). Von Neumann IC designs are simply too inefficient to create General A.I., which is what I believe the raised concerns are about. Time will tell but it should be at least a couple decades until the commercialization of new computing platforms due to entrenched systems, competitive NM designs, IP and economy-of-scale issues.

Para - I don't disagree that society shouldn't be concerned with the technology trajectory... far from it. I believe Man as the creator can also use creativity to work around the "Technology will kill us" issue. Is it possible to create the 3 Laws of Robotics such as Asimov proposed... and people forget that positronic brains can't exist without (as stated in his novels)? I think it's actually quite possible with the correct regulation (otherwise we're in for Blade Runner x 1 million).
