Howard University was forced to cancel a graduation ceremony after furious relatives began banging on doors and smashing windows after the auditorium hit capacity.

The graduation ceremony for the historically black college's College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences was shut down before the keynote address after space ran out at the Cramton Auditorium in Washington DC.

Relatives of some of the graduates were seen on video chanting 'Let us in' as they pounded on the doors as the ceremony began on Thursday.

Images showed a shattered glass door as the angry relatives tried to push their way past security.

At least one person was hurt in the commotion, according to DC officials. Various reports said the injured person was a student who was treated for a cut.

Dean of the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences Gina Brown made announcement claiming the fire department had shut the ceremony down.

'Because of the size of the room and because our relatives sometimes do not know how to act, the fire department is now here to shut us down,' she said.

However, the DC fire department has denied they shut down the graduation.

The department said: 'D.C. Fire and EMS did not shut down tonight’s event... At 6:42 p.m., we responded to the Cramton Auditorium for a medical local at the request of campus police.

'The patient was evaluated and refused transport, and D.C. Fire and EMS departed.'

Howard later said in their own statement that someone was removed from the building before the ceremony and they came back and broke a window.

The school's statement read: 'This incident led to a disturbance among guests outside of the facility, resulting in a disruption of the program.

'Guests in attendance were immediately dispersed following this incident.'

Graduate Halle Ragoonanan told NBC Washington she was heartbroken to not be able to walk to receive her diploma in front of her family, specially because she graduation high school in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic.

She said: 'I didn’t get to walk. I graduated magna cum laude and I didn’t even get to walk.

'I’m the class of 2020. I didn’t get to walk for my high school graduation and I didn’t get to walk for my college graduation.'

It comes as other graduation ceremonies have been disturbed over the war in Gaza.

Dozens of students stormed out of Duke University's commencement ceremony in protest over guest speaker Jerry Seinfeld who has supported Israel since the October 7 atrocity by Hamas and throughout the war in Gaza.

The comedian, 70, was met with a a mix of cheers and boos as he was introduced before students carrying flags and chanting 'free, free Palestine' marched out of the Wallace Wade Stadium on Sunday.

How did they underestimate the turnout like that? I'm convinced that these colleges only hire idiots who couldn't make it in the real world.

People are crazy anymore, there are no rules that can't be broken, no actions that they will be held accountable for,

The futur will be Zoom Graduations, deliver the diplomas by email via DocuSign, and thanks for the debt!

I don't know. Maybe they didn't underestimate, but only allowed so many tickets or whatever per graduate. Given the extended families it's possibel that those who didn't get a formal invite decided to come anyway?

The way my school did it was you got two tickets, if you don't reserve them by X date they are given away for some other use. Any guests above two had to watch on video.

back in the 80s in cleveland, my high school graduation was very composed and polite. the principal had told everyone before it started that one noisemaker, one loud whoop or scream and he'd shut it down like he did the last year. He told parents to stand and clap for your child then sit down and be quiet for the other students. no hollering or he'd shut it down.

parents listened then.

Is anyone ever allowed to use the word "demographics" these days?

and for the record, my demographics include:

* retired, crotchety, old sailor
* earned undergrad and MBA after Navy retirement
* understand and respect the meaning of the words, "decorum, respect, and politeness"
* respect for my degrees
* proud to represent my family in an honorable manner

Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

The definition of the words we used, carry a meaning of their own...

Why is the Seinfeld walkout at Duke mentioned in this article? It has absolutely nothing to do with this story.

Unless Howard U. made it very clear than all grads were limited to X number of guests, I kind of feel for the families here. Though nothing excuses the violence. I went to a college that was so big, they used the downtown sports arena for graduation, and it was packed at well over 10k people for the ceremony. Fred Rogers gave the keynote.

That's my first thought as well. In the graduations I had, they gave us a limited number of tickets for guests to attend.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." My daughter just graduated last weekend. It was very special because yes, she was the class of 2020. Although we had our graduation (not Howard, to be clear), I despise the people that did this. Barbarians that cannot accept that the world should bend to their demands. And these poor kids suffer the consequences of others -- again.

Edit to add, our college predicted rain and issued tickets.

Either somebody 'over-sold' the ceremony or, people showed up without regard to needing tickets.

I think we each got four tickets only for both HS & college; HS grad was held at the city civic center auditorium, versus school stadium for college. It was explicitly pointed-out that there was no other tickets available as seating limitations repeatedly were pointed-out.

Very unfortunate.
You work hard to achieve such standing and attain such an accomplishment only to see it upended because people don't know how to behave.

Would be nice if the dean of those departments are gracious and generous enough to hold small reception party to recognize those students and invite their families in light of this stupidity.
