(Meredith) — Authorities in Texas said a man in their custody could be the most prolific serial killer in U.S. history, now connected to 90 murders spanning more than a dozen states.

Samuel Little, 78, was already serving three life sentences in California for strangling and killing three women in the late 1980s. This July, he was charged with the 1994 Texas murder of Denise Christie Brothers, 38, and transferred to a Texas jail.

Texas authorities said Little confessed to 90 murders spanning 14 states between 1970 and 2005. Authorities have confirmed more than 30 of those 90 murders.

According to CNN, Texas authorities said Little confessed to killing Brothers and later confessed to 90 murders spanning 14 states between 1970 and 2005.

Ector County District Attorney Bobby Bland told CNN authorities have confirmed more than 30 of those 90 murders.

Formal charges on the recently-confessed murders have not yet been brought forward. Little is awaiting trial in Ector County, Texas for Brothers' murder.

Authorities said Little confessed to murders in Texas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Illinois, Ohio, California, Indiana, Arizona, New Mexico and South Carolina.

Prosecutors said they hope the victims' families finally get justice.

If it's true that Little killed 90 people, he would have the highest body count of any serial killer in U.S. history, passing up Gary Ridgway.

Ridgway, also known as the Green River Killer, confessed to killing 71 girls and women in Washington state during the 1980s and 1990s. He was convicted of 49 of those murders and is serving life in prison at the Washington State Penitentiary.
