as they land in France on the D-Day jump.

You will all recall that they were noticeable by their absence in this day back in 1944...

All I can say, screw them.

Meanwhile, they let radical Islamist terrorists flood their country, roll out the red carpet for them.

The French have always been the odd ducks of the Western world.

We can always count on the French to be there when they need us.

Comments are gold:

one asked: ‘Where were they in 1944?’

Another joked that British troops should have simply jumped between 12 noon and 3pm when French officials were out to lunch,

A third added: ‘Vive la bureaucracy.’

My father got to France about June 8, 1944 to begin his walking tour of France, Luxembourg, Germany and other points of interest.

About the only thing he told me about the whole trip was that he never saw any French government employees of any kind.

That's OK, though. He didn't have a passport with him that time, just his military ID.

Reminds me of this:

Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane. At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on. "You have been to France before, monsieur?" the customs officer asked sarcastically.

Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously.

"Then you should know enough to have your passport ready."

The American said, "The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it."

"Impossible. Americans always have to show their passports on arrival in France!"

The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then, he quietly explained, "Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find a single Frenchman to show a passport to."

They are just following their historical examples from the Bourbon Restoration.

Absolutely pathetic performance by the French, who needed both the US and Britain to save them in two world wars. I still remember DeGualle ordering the US military to leave France in the late 50s or early 60s. As was pointed out at the time, those American military, (not to mention the British and Canadian servicemen), who could not leave were those brave soldiers buried in the US, British, and Canadian military cemeteries across France.

I spent every 4th of July in Paris when I served in Germany.

I was to meet another couple at the Arc de Triomphe for dinner. As I came up out of the Metro station, it was pretty clear that something was different.

The Champs Elysee was empty of cars. There were no cars circling the Arc in the Place Charles de Gaulle. There were no tourists around the Arc de Triomphe.

Then I heard a band playing the Star Spangled Banner, and the French military band led a group of WW II vets from the American Legion up the Champs, escorted by a unit of French infantry, to lay a wreath at the eternal flame under the Arc.

I kind of like the French.

"I vowed to myself to fight against evil more completely and more wholeheartedly than I ever did before. . . . That’s the only way to pay back part of that vast debt, to live up to and try to fulfill that tremendous obligation."

Alfred Hornik, Sunday, December 2, 1945 to his family, on his continuing duty to others for surviving WW II.

My Dad crash landed in France in February of 1944 . No government officials to greet them . Just a French farmer that wanted to know who was going to clean up the mess they made .

Shit like this didn't have to happen on the Dropzone but, somebody was insistent that it did. US citizens returning to the US via Canada, Ireland and a few other countries, you have your passport checked BEFORE landing back in the US. France could've done the same at whatever airfield that took-off from prior to arriving or, handled it all back where ever the troops are staying.

The French are good folks, as it's better to have them on our side than not. I'm guessing this is some senior-level bureaucrat who's thinks it's their duty to stick-it to the Brits for all the Brexit-issues and wants to make their participation a bit more burdensome. The US paratroopers that do the drop are usually out of Italy (173rd ABN) so they're already Shengen-zone cleared.

Used French WW2 rifles for sale.
Excellent condition. Never fired, only dropped once.
