We're going on our first cruise soon, sailing out of Tampa on Royal Caribbean's 'Rhapsody of the Seas'. My wife was reading that we need to bring a suit and dress for formal nights in the dining room. I wasn't planning on bringing that type of stuff on a cruise, so I called RC to ask about it. The lady I spoke with never answered whether formal clothes were required on 'formal nights', so I thought I'd ask those that have been there done that.

Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice - pull down your pants and slide on the ice.

That is alwaya optional. If tou want to psrticipate in those dinners, bring the clothes.

If you don't want to, they can’t make you and you won’t stsrve.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

I have been on that boat. You can dress up for formal night or skip the dining room that night and have a burger by the pool, or pizza or even order room service. I would suggest you pack a coat and tie and take your lady to nice dinner though Wink

Recently sailed on Victory. Formal night had peopled dressed anywhere from black tie to business casual. Like most things, do what is best for you and your circumstance. If you don't measure up to the standards of complete strangers, how much sleep will you lose?

Just keep in mind that it's a ship, not a boat. It's your cabin, not your room. It's the passageway, not hallway.

We've been on many cruises, including the one you're going on, and you'll find that regardless of the mode of dress recommended (there are several categories) just don't show up in a tank top and sandals and you'll be fine.

I've been on same ship. I don't do formal since retiring, don't even own a suit. You can go in slacks and a collar type shirt. But I'd say just skip it.

Take a suit and take your girl to a fancy dinner.

Like others have said, you don't have to participate and there are several other eating venues to dine informally.

But, the sheer number of people dresses to the nines, when you see them, will call to question your choice of not participating.

Only if you're facing the bow of the ship!
