I was noodling around on ADSB to kill some time and ran across an unusal "icon" or depiction they use on the screen to illustrate what type of aircraft it may be. Saw an odd one, clicked on it, wow! Tail number is N19JV.

Ever heard of a 1962 CM Magister?

FAA N-number search for N19JV gave a little info, then I did a google search for "1962 CM Magister aircraft".

Made by Fouga, a French manufacturer, shows a 1950's jet trainer, WITH A V-TAIL !

How odd is that?

Ever heard of one?

Can you insure that?

How would you find parts, service manuals, trained personnel, procedures, etc?

How about finding an A&P willing to even look at it, let alone attempt repairs and maintenance and such?

If you google search, on the results page click on "images" as well as the "all"tab.

I’d never heard of a CM Magister, but have seen Fouga Magisters. There were a couple based at SBP for a while.

Same thing. Fouga is the manufacturer. CM-170 is the model designation, and Magister (a title or form of address given to scholars, especially those qualified to teach in a medieval university.) is the nickname.

Not only have I heard of one, I've seen one fly.

IIRC, one of my former bosses has a little cast brass model of one on his desk as well.

This is what I came up with. Looks like a trainer.

What's on the ends of the V-tails? Wing fences (probably not, they are not solid), something for structural stability, antennae, handles of some sort, cosmetic bling?

Not sure, but I've seen similarly shaped VOR antennas.

I think those are the ruddervator counter balances.

Another cool VTail jet is the Cirrus Vision Jet. We have them fly into our airport quite a bit.

I saw one up close during an exercise with the French in 1990. They sent one out towards the carrier and I got the call to intercept it. I remember being a bit surprised that it was faster than anticipated and maneuverability was good... for about a half turn.

Sometime in the early 2000's, I flew with an LAX-based Captain who had one. He was actually making money with it by contracting with the Navy to fly cruise missile profiles against ships in the SoCal operating area.

Those are Eastern Bloc trainers.
You could pick them up CHEAP in the 1990s. Like $10,000.
They're all over Northern Alabama. There's a jet club up at Gadsden.
I've been there a few times.

Interesting. Of all the V-Tail pictures I have looked at so far, only the Magisters have these on the ruddervators.
