Matt Gaetz is holding the Speaker to their agreement. The budget, term limits, impeachment. If McCarthy is forced out, who fills the void? Goetz is hot on this and I wish I could post that CSPAN vid.

Thank you 12131. I hope something comes of this. The Speaker needs to do his job and Congress needs to put this country above their political careers.

I didn't think much of Gaetz when he first came on the scene. He struck me as being a slimy rich kid frat boy, there solely as a status symbol and nothing more. It appears that I judged him wrong. He seems to be one of the few patriots in Washington.

I think McCarthy is doing a good job. Any infighting will just be leveraged by Democrats to their advantage.

Agreed about infighting.

I don't remember the details of any deal. Is such a deal really enforceable? I'm not saying that if McCarthy made such a deal that he shouldn't honor it, but is there really any enforcement mechanism?

Oust him already. How anyone thought that a politician from Ca. was going to do anything positive for our country just baffles me. Really?

The only enforcement mechanism is a Motion to Vacate the chair. I think it would be voted on by the full House, which would probably not gain any Democrat support... since it's about Biden's impeachment. That would be followed by the election of a new Speaker.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

You surely recall what it took to get past Boebert and Gaetz to make him Speaker. Maybe 13 Votes. They held his feet to the fire

That’s a good point nhraracecraft!

I think we often forget just how many like minded people we have in California. This is of course because they are unfortunately outnumbered by complete and total idiots.

How amazing would it be if California was able to unfuck itself? I still hold onto hope that it will happen one day. Naive? Maybe

One rule that was adopted was the number of members needed to put the question on removing the speaker. I thought it was two or three but this article says it's just one.

How a speaker of the House can be ousted with a 'motion to vacate'

Really. It's as if you think every voter and politician in CA is a Democrat. There are locations in CA that are conservative by nature. And the Democrats have ensured the conservative districts are minimized to ensure Democratic control of the state government.

Or would you rather a Republican from a red state be speaker? Maybe you can bring back Liz Cheney from Wyoming.

Agree with you about McCarthy, but I can think of a couple of guys off the top of my head that did/do good for the country, Devin Nunes and Darrell Issa.

I think we all had low expectations for McCarthy, but he came out of the gate swinging and has exceeded my expectations so far. There's always someone else we'd rather have in that slot, but it could be and has been a lot worse before.

If McCarthy is ousted, there is a serious risk that the republicans will split so hard, that a democrat will take the chair.

218 is a majority, and the republicans hold 222 seats, and the democrats 212. However 1 seat is currently vacant, a likely democrat. A defection or abstention of only 5 blue state republicans on a vote for leader would put a moderate democrat in the Speaker's Chair.

And make no mistake, there are RINOs in there who would vote for a moderate dem before they'd vote for Matt Gaetz, MTG, Lauren Boebert, etc.

The house republican's biggest problem, is that unlike the house democrats, they are not a unified party, and some RINOs regard the Gaetz gang as less desirable than a moderate democrat.

1. I think Gaetz is in it only for himself.
2. A couple of weeks ago, I would have said Steve Scalise would be a great speaker. Now he is known to have multiple myeloma, so he’s out.
3. I think the Freedom Caucus people like Jim Jordan are too polarizing and would not be elected speaker.
4. There is a lot of infighting, most of us don’t really understand the rules, and IMO McCarthy is doing a great job as speaker.
5. I am glad the Freedom Caucus people held his feet to the fire before voting for him.
