gearhoundsSome local stations in my neck of the woods have been doing the after hours credit card thing for over 10 years which was great when working midnights, running nonstop calls and running low of juice.

V-TailThe fuel dispensers at Our Little Airport are supposedly* available around the clock.
* They stop working at random intervals and it might take days or weeks to get the problem fixed, because civil service. The airport is owned by the occupants, but the fuel facility is leased by the city, operated and "maintained" by them.

Yes, of course. But obviously there are multiple emergency shutoff stations, and one is most definitely inside near the register.
NFPA 30 covers Motor Fuel Dispensing Facilities and this is the "emergency shutdown" section:

Equipment grounding conductors shall remain connected.

actually, they don't,
managed grocery stores for years that had attached fuel centers, the shut off's are outside the kiosk,
there are breaker boxes and the Veeder Root system inside usually on the wall on the back office section of the kiosk,
ran 4 locations, and visited many many more, none had shutoffs on the inside

sourdough44I’ve never gone to a station when it was closed, but the self-serve pumps were available. I have wondered about such.
I can usually plan my refills to an open station.

However, Most places around here are 24/7 these days. I honestly can’t really remember the last time I saw a gas station closed in middle of the night and dark.

bdylanHa, I never would have guessed that stations actually make the pumps unavailable. When the lights are out around here, it just means the clerk made a mistake. The pumps will still be functional.

GibbA few years back (just before Covid) there was a station that still allowed you to pump before paying. One night they forgot to shut that off when they closed for the night.
When the morning person came in, there was a pile of money on the floor by the mail slot. They checked the cameras and receipts, and saw that people would slide the money into the slot after pumping. The most shocking thing is that the cash on the floor was $3 and change over what was owed!

YellowJacketTypically for me, if the station is closed, the pumps are off. I've known them to shut the pumps off at closing times even on people who are actively fueling their cars.

Expert308I was wondering that same thing yesterday. I didn't need any gas, but absolutely everything was closed (even the convenience stores that never close) and I found myself wondering if the gas pumps at the closed stations were working.

Many of them also keep a padlock on the gas pumps.
Many years ago, Sam’s Club would actually keep their pumps on because I would go fuel at 4 AM before hitting the road.

ryan81986A friend of mine used to work at a gas station and they would shut the pumps off at night. He said every so often someone would show up after hours and manage to get about $0.01 worth of gas out of the pumps and it would screw up their numbers for the next day. Not sure how, but that's what he said.
