The House passed a bill cutting funding for 8700 new IRS agents. An article I read said the bill goes to the Senate where it will be defeated. It seem pointless if that is the case. Anybody care to clarify for me? Thanks

I am not understanding. The Inflation Reduction Act included funding for IRS agents. If the House bill is rejected in the Senate is the funding cut??

If the senate rejects it then the Rs can shit talk the D senators…..and the taxpayers see them for what they are

If it goes thru both houses and Biden vetos it..he looks like he wants to tax everyone and everyone can shit talk him.

The incorrectly named inflation reduction act already passed and was signed. This is a new vote to basically repeal the part that funds the IRS thieves. If the repeal doesn’t pass the senate the funding stays. That’s my understanding anyhow.

Regarding it looking bad to democrats because of taxes, those folks already swallowed the idea that “ it only taxes the rich”. They aren’t bright enough to understand.

It would appear to me that the low hanging fruit is still screwed.

They will continue to tax and spend, and suck productive people dry. They will divide up the spoils until there are no more spoils to divide and the country collapses under the weight of the debt.

If my memory is correct, the former bill added funding for 87,000 new agents and this new bill was to undo that part.
This one will leave some of the funding in place for new employees to help in processing returns and customer service.
The truth is that this is mostly symbolic since the Democrat Senate and White House also have to sign off.

if you want to see the economy improve, cut IRS funding by 90%

we won't need as many social programs if people can keep their own money, and if social programs are cut, the leeches can get a job like the rest of us or starve in place

Otherwise the Democrats just claim the Republicans are just trying to protect their rich friends and that's what the headlines will read, knowing that very few will read beyond that.

I have wondered about this too. On Hannity last night mcCarthy made it sound like the money to hire the agents will not be coming. I, on the other hand, thought it was too little, too late. Unfortunately it appears that I was correct.

As the Reason article in the link says, the IRS did go after a lot of low income people claiming the earned income tax credit. That's because there is so much fraud in it. Even though I worked for SSA, we did have an interface with IRS. A lot of people on SSI (a public assistance program for low income elderly and disabled) did report wages or self employment to the IRS that they never reported to us (which they are required to do.) It would turn out that they never really had the wages or self employment, but they reported it to IRS to claim the credit. The credit was worth more than any taxes they owed, so IRS would cut them a check.

There is certainly a lot of fraud and abuse with the folks receiving governmental assistance. I see tax preparers being indicted on a frequent basis who cater to the welfare class. Guaranteed refunds and the like.

The House still "controls" the normal budgetary process. Why cant they cut normal IRS funding to near zero in the next budget and tell them to live off the Inflation Reduction Act funding?

Which was always a fun reverse proffer discussion with the defense: "Get with your client and let us know which fraud s/he'd like to plead to."
