I’ve been fortunate to have some very positive recent developments in my campaign nd wanted to share them here. For anyone that hasn’t seen my other posts, I’m running for Sheriff of Rensselaer County, NY. I’m seeking the Republican nomination in a very grassroots campaign. In NY State, in order to secure a position on the primary ballot for a countywide position in a county my size, the candidate needs to submit 1,000 signatures obtained between February 28 and April 6. The witnesses to the signatures also have to be enrolled Republicans from the county, eligible to vote in the primary. Let me tell you, 1,000 signatures doesn’t seem like much, but when there are less than 6 weeks to get the signatures, and it’s cold and snowy, and an enrolled Republican can only sign a petition for one candidate, 1,000 signatures is a lot. I was told that the signature phase is where most campaigns die, and I believe it. I got my signatures and felt like Rocky after he defeated Ivan Drago when I got done. It was one hell of an accomplishment and I can’t thank my volunteers enough as well. I started off as one of 10 Republican candidates. The county’s executive committee chose another candidate, the least qualified candidate (by far) as it turned out, but I remained undaunted. Nobody else was willing to put the work in for a primary, but I’m stubborn so off I went. Initially with just myself, my family and a couple friends, my efforts quickly resulted in more volunteers coming on board and my grassroots effort was off the ground. I started to gain attention through my hard efforts and those of my volunteers. I personally knocked on over 1,000 doors myself, got almost as many signatures, and with the help of my volunteers submitted well in excess of the required signatures. In the meantime, another friend and former coworker, a now retired chief of police was recruited by the Democrat party to run on the Democrat line. The race was starting to take shape. When I handed in my required signatures last week, I was the first person to do so. I didn’t have the most signatures but I had more than half what my primary competitor had, and he had 150 volunteers getting signatures for him. To say that I’m proud is an understatement. The big development is that I’m at the point that the competition can no longer make a general objection to my petitions. There’s no chance that they could invalidate enough of my petitions to knock me out of the race, and the news media is referring to my primary race and getting comments from me as a candidate. So even though the official announcements are still to be made… Lt CHEG (hopefully soon to be Sheriff CHEG) is heading for a primary. This is no small feat. I’ve continued my grassroots efforts and have been continuing to knock on doors, speak with first responders and attend membership meetings at gun clubs in the county to ensure them of my unwavering support of the 2nd Amendment. My opponents have been able to fall back on their party apparatus support and just don’t seem quite as hungry, so my lack of support has been able to motivate me to really make connections with the voters. While my Democratic opponent is a good guy and definitely qualified for the job, he’s being backed by the same democrats that brought NY state the (Un)SAFE Act, the Concealed Carry Improvement Act (that basically made it illegal to carry a gun anywhere) and disastrous bail reform that has made our communities less safe and the work of law enforcement much more difficult. My Republican opponent is clearly a party apparatchik, nice enough but clearly unqualified for the position. He has 3 years of actual law enforcement experience from the beginning of his career, but has spent the last 11 years in an officer doing strictly clerical, non law enforcement work, that is done by non sworn personnel at every other sheriff’s office in the area. He seems more focused on performing with his country music band than being sheriff, and openly boasts about how many out of town gigs he has lined up, along with recording excursions to Nashville, yet refuses to debate me. Friends, I know that most of you don’t know me from Adam, but trust me when I tell you that there just shouldn’t even be a comparison between the 2 of us but because I wasn’t the hand selected party man I’ve had to fight hard for every inch of ground I’ve gained. So ultimately, I’m remaining positive and think that I have a real chance at winning this. A friend ran for an office. while he failed the lesson learned was get a cope of who votes from the county. Work the voters list as best you can. Do not spend a lot of time on people who do not vote. Good luck. Work smart and hard. | |||

Don’t feel bad. I wasn’t quick at spelling “Rensselaer” until I was a freshman at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and therefore got lots of practice lol. Thank you so much for the support. It really means a lot to see how engaged you are with all my posts. It’s definitely an uphill battle but I’m giving it all I’ve got! It’s always nice to see a friendly comment and a “like” when I poke the bear. Looks like I must be making some points because the mud has begun to be slung in my direction. My opponent in the primary was endorsed by the NYSRPA, even though I was told that they would not endorse a primary candidate. They also made an endorsement without even so much as asking my opinions on anything, or sending out a questionnaire, or anything similar. NYSRPA is based out of Rensselaer County by the way. I posted my disappointment about this on Facebook and explained that I think I’m still clearly the better 2nd Amendment choice, heck my opponent hadn’t even said directly what he would do about the SAFE Act or CCIA (or any thing else for that matter). That must have struck a nerve because they started to do their research to smear me. They even posted something I said here on SIGforum, taking it totally out of context and trying to paint me as either crazy or trying to entrap someone on this forum. The fact of the matter is that I’m not a politician. I want to be sheriff and that’s it. I’m a complete newcomer to the scene and I’ve been outperforming their preferred apparatchik “yes man”. I anticipated this, so I’m not hurt by any of this but I am a bit disappointed. The same folks that railed on the Democrats for keeping Joe Biden in the basement throughout the 2020 election cycle are now hiding their preferred candidate in this race and doing everything they can to prevent him from debating. The same folks that decry the unfair way the liberal media treats conservatives, are now spreading lies about me. I’m staying above any of that, and I think the voters appreciate that. I absolutely plan to hold my opponent to the rules, and the laws, but I have no intention of jumping in the slop and fighting dirty. On a related note, I want to thank Para for running such a tight ship here. In the post from this forum that was trying to be used to smear me, all the way back in 2020, Para recognized that what I said could be interpreted differently than how I intended, and he called me out on it. I subsequently clarified my position, which I think removes any doubt about the lack of any nefarious motives to my post. That is effective moderation and administration of a forum folks, and I am grateful that this place has been an online home to me for over 20 years. Some 23 years ago when I saw the (ultimately successful) efforts to recall the sheriff at the time, it dawned on me that people claim to hate politicians—until they stop acting like politicians and try to do their job in accordance with their principles and what's best, then the public hates that even more. I have yet to see any coverage of this in the local paper (TU). It seems odd that NYSRPA wouldn't talk to you as they and Rensselaer County are at the heart of Bruen and the SCOTUS.
