"The unknown history of IBC Root Beer

The history of IBC Root Beer is a fascinating tale that spans more than a century, intertwining with the social, economic, and cultural history of the United States.

From its humble beginnings in St. Louis, Missouri, during the tumultuous era of Prohibition, to its evolution into a beloved national brand, IBC has endured the test of time.
...
During the dark days of Prohibition, when the sale and consumption of alcohol were strictly forbidden, Americans found solace in a sweet and refreshing alternative—Root Beer.

As the nation grappled with the social and economic consequences of the 18th Amendment, the Griesedieck family's root beer emerged as a beacon of hope, offering a legal and satisfying beverage option.

The popularity of IBC Root Beer soared during this period, as people from all walks of life embraced the rich, creamy flavor that became synonymous with the brand.
...
In a move that echoed the brand's commitment to quality and responsiveness to consumer preferences, IBC made a significant reformulation to its beverages in July 2016.

The company transitioned from using high-fructose corn syrup to cane sugar (emphasis mine)..."

Of soft drinks, root beer is my second favorite after non-Pepsi cola. But I'm a cheapskate frugal and buy the store brand 2-liter bottles.

My introduction to IBC was at a mom and pop market on Becker Street in Belen New Mexico around 1986. I was the parts manager at a car dealer there and one Saturday my assistant and I were discussing the differences in products from there vs. east of the Mississippi River.

I remarked that there were no good root beers out west at least in our area, no Hires, just that (IMO) poor MUG brand, too sickly sweet for me. Well Art told me “Follow me after work and I’ll show you something” so off we went. Down near the Santa Fe depot we stopped at this market, screen door kind of place, something of a rarity even back then. Place was, well, dated to be polite, but clean and neat.

He went to the refrigerator and pulled out a couple of brown bottles and handed me one. So we went to the counter, paid and left. Popped the top outside and was I surprised.

So afterwards on hot Saturdays on my way home (58 miles) I’d stop in and grab a cold one for the road. Moved back to Michigan a couple years later and to my delight found it was available at a couple markets here.

Staple of my childhood, though it is becoming harder to find locally. And has transitioned from 6 to 4 pack for the same price.

A Perpetual Disappointment...

IBC finally got smart and changed from HFCS to cane sugar in 2016. Still folks around here much prefer 1919 root beer with its taste and high quality ingredients to all other alternatives including IBC.
