Ok, did some looking around today and yesterday.

I'm really, really, REALLY tempted to go with this thing here.

https://www.napoleon.com/en/us...0-rsib-p500rsibpss-3

Problem is it is 1600 bucks!!!!! That is a huge outlay for me considering. I have it, and can afford it, but damn that seems like a shit ton to a guy who was THRILLED 6 years ago when he got a 350 dollar grill.

Now, you can get the grill cheaper, if you take off the rear rotisserie burner, or take off the infared side burner. Any experience with those? I've not had either, so I really don't know if I would use either one or not. But if i would use it, it seems stupid to buy a super expensive grill and NOT get some options just to save 100 bucks...

Also with this grill you can get griddle top sections, 45 bucks each, that with 2 of them will turn ALMOST the entire cooking surface into a griddle top. So, for 1700 dollars, this meets most goals, and seems to be an excellent grill for the money. It also has a 15 year warranty!

Now, I also looked at the Sam's club, as my father has a Members Mark branded (forget who makes his as his is nearly 20 years old and is still going strong) that he loves.

SO first looked at this:

https://www.samsclub.com/sams/...?xid=plp_product_1_9

It is online only so I can't actually see it in person.

THis one is a bit larger, has a sear burner AND a regular side burner. Now, I have very rarely used a side burner, but my cooking prowess has significantly increased since I had a grill with that option, So i may use it more. Still seems like a bit more than I need. I also can't get the measurements of the grill grates to see if the aftermarket grill grates (and of course grill grates griddle sections) will work, therefore allowing me to use this as a griddle too.

So then I looked at a cheap one, that they actually had in stock.

https://www.samsclub.com/sams/...?xid=plp_product_1_7

This one is exactly what you would expect, and probably close to what I'm replacing. The burners seem pretty far apart and I don't see how you couldn't get hot and cold spots. But with using grill grates that might help, and hey, it's cheap.

But they also had a 36 inch griddle next to it and I could get BOTH of those things for the price of the thing above, and I could get 5 of them for what I could get the Napoleon for.

I looked at a couple webers, but honestly wasn't impressed. For the same price as the Napoleons they don't seem as nice, or have as many features.

Am I a moron for getting a 1600 dollar grill?

Do you guys use infrared sear burners?

Do you use the rear rotisserie burners?

Am i soft in the head for even considering dropping that kind of cash on an outdoor grill?

Kevin

I have a Weber. Was a gift but replacement cost for the model is well above $1000. It’s been great for 10 plus years. Searing heat spread evenly. Solid build and no issues other than replacing burners and grates now and then. Much better than the $400 grill that I had before. Poor heat and rusted apart in a few years.

So I wouldn’t flinch at buying another $1000+ grill.

If you like it and can afford it... and you think it's worth it... then go for it!
Personally, I'd rather have a used Weber than a Sam's Club grill. But I haven't shopped grills anytime recently. You have. So if you think the Napoleons are nicer than the new Webers, then they probably are.

But... no grill is going to be without issues in 5 years, especially if you don't give it a good cleaning at least once a year. You have to get all of that grease out that builds up everywhere.

That's the exact grill I have and complained about on page 2. The knobs on mine are not that fancy. I've used the back rotisserie a couple times, it works fine. Like I said its a nice grill but I don't think its worth the price. The infrared sear burner I use for making hot dogs, takes about a minute. To sear I turn on all 4 burners for about 10 minutes, get it up top about 700 degrees and sear on the grill. It sure is pretty though.

I think the best value in the Weber line is the Spirit series. As you get the fundamentals of what makes a Weber a Weber, but without the huge price. I wasn't originally sold on the open cart design, but I think it actually works better in daily use. As you have to turn on and off the propane every time you use the grill and it is right there in the open. I suspect the other reason they went to the open cart design was for better moisture control/rust prevention.

Apparently there are a couple of updates to the model new for 2019.

I found what I thought was the same grill on Amazon for 400ndollars cheaper. I almost bought it but wanted to see why it was so much less. Apparently it was the 2017 model with different knobs and heat spreaders. Some of the reviews of the 2017 model said the same as you. When did you get yours?

Members Mark branded

Members Mark is made for Sams by Nexgrill, they are junk, I bought one, a $1000 grill, lasted two years before doors failed to stay shut, burners quit working, igniters failed,

The main IR burner was great for the first year then you couldn't keep it lit. To use it you had to hold in the temp dial as if you were lighting it, failed gas valve. Failed gas hose, the fronts of the two drawers in the cabinets came off the drawers. The stainless steel grates popped open exposing the rusted cores after two years.

FWIW I Never used the rear IR rotisserie which oddly enough still worked when I rolled it to the curb unlike the rest of the POS.

BTW NEXGRILL is HQ in Taiwan, fwiw....

The sad thing is I bought it to have one that would last, which it didn't, always covered in a protected area and well cared for, the parts are just substandard.

The Weber grills last, I've had two, one survived 12 years in the midwest winters, being moved to CA and back before I had to junk it when the grate gave out, the only reason I got rid of it is Weber stopped making the grates for it, otherwise it was still working perfectly.

Unless you roast small hogs, turkeys, legs of lamb and rotisserie quite a bit it's nice but not necessary, I'd dump that and get the flat griddles instead.

Either is good, but run from Nexgrill...

I saw a NexGrill at Costco, it looked like a Weber wannabe copy.

You said it was you and the wife? Why do you feel like you need a grill the size of a small car?

I'd go with a Weber Spirit II E-310, you'll love it. $449 at Home Depot.

Look at that beaut!

Most of the forum that does not have experience with both Weber and Napoleon.

If you are really going to use the grill frequently, Buy the Napoleon.
My buddy does some great stuff with the sear! And whole chickens on the rotisserie are awesome.

Once the kids are bigger and I don’t have to supervise them all the time a Napoleon will be in the backyard.

I grill on my Weber Genesis at least 3-4 times a week year round and probably 4-5 times during summer months. It's now 4 years old, going strong and cooks as well as it did the day I first fired it up. Only replace the flavor bars once as I wanted SS, and the igniter ($5). Big enough to cook for my extended family (12 adults)

I think that Napoleon would be a great grill and no doubt as good or better than a comparable Weber. If you are intending on using this a lot (assume from what you said you are) then stay away from those cheap-ass Sam's Club grills. You only get what you pay for and I'm pretty confident in saying you would be very disappointed. As to the add on accessories (infrared etc) they are not really necessary to turn out very good outdoor meals. Everything you can do with these accessories can be done in other ways... well except the side burner, but I think I've used mine twice.

Good luck. It's only money.

I had the same thoughts.. do I really want to spend 1400 on a grill when I was looking to replace the Weber.

Can’t go wrong with either Napoleon or Weber after owning both

I use the IR quite a bit for searing steaks and stuff after sous vide

Didn’t think I’d use the rotisserie much but actually do at least once a month

I probably use those two more than the actual grill area since I find myself cooking on the egg more for the grilling aspect

Here's another plug or two for consideration of the Weber Genesis II -

- they 'jet' the burners so the intensity/heat of the 'flame' in each of the burners (which are aligned front to rear) is consistent from left to right across the grill, and from the front of the burner to the rear of the burner.

their claim of course is that this makes for consistent heat anywhere on the surface of the grill.

- You can purchase what they call their "iGrill' system. This is an electronic thermometer with probes that are attached to it. You set an individual probe for an internal temp., put the probe in whatever you are cooking and the system will alert you when that temp is reached. Of course you can also load the app on your phone to monitor the temp as your item is cooking.

I do not have this but know of someone that does, and they say it works and they like using it.

Let's put the 'price' of a quality grill into perspective -

Assume the (quality) grill costs $1,000.00, and that you will get 15 years of use out of it (maybe more).

Well, that calculates out to an investment of less than $0.20 per day!

Why are you even agonizing a scintilla over getting something that will provide for years of fun, nourishment and satisfaction for you, your family and friends?

You're welcome!

Wait! WHUT?! I think that I just made the case for myself to pick up a new SIG Ultra Compact, which is being discussed elsewhere on this forum! LOL!!

HAHAHA, sorry, forgot to update it.

Since I'm impressionable and have no willpower, I went with the Napoleon...

I got this model:

https://www.napoleon.com/en/us...0-rsib-p500rsibpss-3

With all the accessories it cost just under 2k.

BUt it is a SWEET grill.

I got the rotisserie and basket, griddle top, smoker box, and a bunch of other stuff with it too.

Thus far I am VERY happy.

I'd love to have that, but unfortunately my Weber is only 8 years old currently, so I've got another 10-12 years before I need to grill shop again. Wonder how their 2031 models will look?

Sweet purchase, enjoy it! We need a range report and strak and burger pics!

Try a whole chicken or rib roast on the rotisserie, man those things are great on rotisserie.
