Compressed air, a soft brushing where the air comes in/out will tell you instantly if its gathering dust.

Remove your HD if you are bringing it to the shop.

Here in the 4th World i start by blowing air with my mouth where the intake is, if dust comes out from the other end, there’s my clue.

Some advise against compressed air saying it will make a bad situation even worse.

In order to get the HD out, I'd have to take off the bottom cover, it seems. I'm not going to fool with it.

The fan has always been quiet on this laptop, but, yeah, it seems as if it's not running at all now. I'm just going to remove all personal info to a separate drive and take the laptop in to a shop when I get home.

Thanks to everyone for the guidance.
