Laptop malfunction Login/Join
Just because something is legal to do doesn't mean it is the smart thing to do.

I have a laptop next to my recliner and yesterday afternoon while sitting there it started really screwing up. Finally froze up and I couldn't even do a hard shutdown on it.
My whole house generator is about 15/20 feet away and had been running since about 7pm Tuesday night after a storm knocked the power out. I set it aside and watched tv.
About 7:30 last night the power came back on and the generator shut down. Shortly there after I noticed the screen lit up on the laptop. Played with it a bit, it was very slow but was responding.
This morning it fired up, bit slow to load but otherwise worked fine.
I have to assume the generator being so close was affecting it.
Anybody else ever notice something similar?

I'm no expert but more info on the spec's of the hardware and software would help a lot.

Has yours had normal updates and have you run antivirus and security updates, for a start?

Just to eliminate one possibility, when you say the laptop is next to your recliner, it's not down on carpet is it?

It's an HP with Win 11.
Setting on a side table next to the chair inside the basement. Usually plugged in power.
I suspect the magnetic field of the 22kw generator is the cause.
Has PCmatic that runs periodically.

Could also be the frequency stability of the generator output (how close to 60 Hz does it stay?) as well as how accurately it mimics a sine wave under whatever load it’s carrying?

Was it plugged in at the time? I don’t see how it the generator would affect it if it wasn’t. Don’t think it would even if it was plugged in. Unless my understanding is wrong, the laptop always runs off the battery even if plugged in. That should take care of any dirty power coming from the generator. Our whole house generator sits right outside my office and I haven’t seen any issues.

Plugged in and unplugged. I tried it both ways. I wish I had thought to move the laptop a further distance away when it was screwed up.
As the frequency comments that is not something I could measure without somebody teaching me how and what equipment I would need.
