We just got a new area rug for our living room. It’s a pretty short pile, I’d guess about 1/4 to 3/8 inch. It’s on a thin pad, on a hardwood floor.
We have an older Panasonic upright, that we’ve had for years, and it’s really hard to push, or pull across this new carpet. We also have a Dyson, and it is damn near impossible to drag across the rug even on the Deep setting.
If anyone has any suggestions for a vacuum, I’d really appreciate it. I don’t want to do the try it, and take it back method if I can keep from it.

I use my Dyson V10 on my area rugs, large and small. On the small rugs that want to shift around from the dragging and suction, I just put it on Low, stand on one end of the rug to hold it in place, and push the Dyson away from my feet. Repeat for the other half by standing on the other end. Might have to do it in quarters for a slightly larger rug.
Our Dyson is a DC28. We do have a Dyson V8, but it’s not much better. It’s a little easier to push, but the power head just bounces up and down when you pull it. I don’t really know how good a job it would do.

Have similar setup, different rugs on all hardwood floors, we have two Dysons, full size and the stick, on certain short nap rugs it can be difficult to pull/push the Dysons depending on the suction setting (Stick) or direction of the nap in the rug.
As mentioned you can try different directions to see if one is easier than the other, the higher suction ability of the Dyson seems to make pulling it easier in one direction over the other, or, if you have the Dyson stick, setting it to the lower of the two suction values...
We use the stick vacuum more than the full size daily for touch up and quick cleaning, they do an excellent job..

I have a Dyson and a Shark, both are bagless, for vacuuming the carpets and rugs.
I picked up a Miele canister vac a couple of years ago. The local professional vacuum and janitorial supply had a used one (trade in) and I got it for an amazing price. That's the type the canister rolls on the floor and there is a something like 6 foot hose that connects to a metal tube and attachment. It works great!!! I use it for the hardwood and tile floors, upholstery, and the carpets and rugs too, etc etc etc.
I recommend you price a Miele canister vac now for Black Friday sales.
If mine craps out, I'll just buy another one, same thing. I *think* they are repairable and parts and service are easily available. Not a throw away item. .

We spent a stupid amount of money on TV brand bagless machines AND a small fortune on a Filter Queen.
The bagless machines (A Shark and a Dyson) were hard to maneuver, noisy and not terribly effective.
The Filter Queen was a HUGE disappointment. My wife had a Filter Queen she bought in 1962 (I still use it in the basement) that set the standard for power, ease of use and quality. The replacement we bought in 2010 or thereabouts, thinking it would be of the same quality, was a complete piece of plastic crap.
She likes the Miele so much we bought two: One for upstairs, one for downstairs.
Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

Turn down the suction on your current vacuums. I’m going to guess your area rug is thin and being sucked into the vacuum around the beater a bit making it hard to push the vacuum.
Our Miele has a knob on the canister that changes the speed of the motor. The old Electrolux had a knob on the handle that allows air to be sucked in at that point reducing the amount of suction at the head.

We love our recently added Rainbow. Pricey and still paying it off at 0% interest, but if works much better on all surfaces than our previous Dyson Animal (not sure which model but 7+ years old).

I’ve actually wondered about that. Sadly, neither one of our vacuums have a way to control suction.

I purchased a Riccaro upright (bag collection) from a local vacuum shop about five years ago and it is a great machine.
I took it in for a tune-up about a month or so ago and noticed that he did not carry them any more, with the reason being that the daughter who took over the business out-sourced most of the manufacturing to China.
He now sells and stands-by the Miele brand.
He LOVES Dyson’s, but only because he makes a small fortune from repairing them. LOL!!

We have a couple of Mieles, the canister for almost 20 years and the upright about 10. Maybe had to replace a belt twice on the canister. Solid products and they work well.
