I live in New York State.
My Brother lives in South Carolina. He has a child (College Student living off campus) very near Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The College Student will be near Fort Lauderdale for multiple years.
The College Student has recently expressed some interest in concealed carry.
We/they are looking for recommendations for a wide variety of items.

Places for a new shooter to get some training. Potentially, starting off with a NRA Basic Pistol Class?
Then, some appropriate concealed carry training.
What indoor/outdoor ranges in the Fort Lauderdale vicinity have a wide selection of rental pistols?
What is available outside Fort Lauderdale but within a reasonable driving range? College Student has a car.
What ranges to visit, and what ranges to stay away from.
What local Fort Lauderdale trainers are recommended, and who to stay away from?

Any/all suggestions welcomed!
And if a local Fort Lauderdale SIG Forum Member would like to become a personal Mentor for a new shooter and volunteer some time, that would be welcomed also.
The College Student would like to fire a wide selection of appropriate concealed carry pistols before purchasing one.
SIG P365, HK P30/P30sk, HK P2000/P2000sk and whatever else you have/appropriate for CCW/like to shoot.
The College Student/Dad would gladly pay for any ammunition fired if a local SIG Forum Member steps up to the task.
The College Student has fired handguns/AR rifles before, but is certainly lacking in training/experience.

I am in CFL, and can only offer some guidance.

The link for applications for CWP in FL is here - link they will provide all the forms and directions at a local CWP class.

FYI you no longer need a CWP to carry in Florida, however if you want the advantages of being able to walk in and buy a gun and leave the same day you'll want the CWP.


As far as getting his CWP, he can go to the Shoot Straight location in FT Lauderdale to take the class. I suggest he get his fingerprints done electronically, it speeds up the process.

They also have a basic firearms/safety class.

He can also go to the Florida Gun Show in Miami Nov 2-3 and take a class there.

Since he has transportation, Sig Academy is having a big training class in Volusia County (Daytona/New Symrna) November 2, with several beginner level courses as well as advanced by Sig qualified instructors.

Its a 3 and a half hour drive straight up 95.

I live in one of the suburbs of Ft Lauderdale and I shoot at Gun World of South Florida in Deerfield Beach. They do some training there and have about 30-40 handguns to rent and long guns as well to rent. Shoot Straight probably rents handguns as well to shoot. They can also contact Direct Hit Firearms Training. I have heard good things about them. I hope this helps.
