for you or some one you cared about?

a second phone in either day glo orange or yellow.
to almost never be used.

since its never accepting calls, its always off and saving the battery .

the only reason to use it is when you need to call one of 50 urgent numbers .

non-emergency police ,fire, tow truck, ambulance, non-emergency sheriff's, Highway patrol, dentist family members,

non-emergency D.N.R. ,gas or electrical companies, maybe a work contact or three.

would it be worth the added peace of mind ?

maybe there is a guy in the ditch that needs help but its not a life threatening situation.

maybe you need help but not lights and sirens , help.

your wallet gets stolen and you need to call your credit card companies , NOW !

it would able you to
A. keep your primary cell open
B. not worry about that essential battery charge when you need it.

C. have a cell if your primary gets lost or stolen

d.transfer info from your primary ( someone calling you ), to the L.E. on the Urgent Cell.

$49.00 for the phone.
$2.25 per month.
$59.00 for the month that uses more than 60 minutes.

Do you have an old gsm phone that you aren’t using and is ATT good in your area?

I have a freedompop sim card in an old iphone se. It uses att towers. Sim card was $10.

Monthly service is free. It comes with 200 mins, 200 MB and 500 text (no pic or video) messages.

I keep it in my glove box so if I ever lose my phone I can grab that out of the car and start tracking my primary phone.

Nope. I have a laminated business card with the phone numbers of 10 people I know would answer the phone in the middle of the night or from an unknown number.

and if your primary cell goes missing, broken, lost or stolen , you will just get by until you get to a land line somewhere?

Sounds like a good idea. Are there any disadvantages? Seems almost too good to be true.

I essential have an emergency phone, because T-mobile has a 4-lines package and I only needed 3 lines. So I picked a small soap-bar phone that I can slip in my back pocket when cycling, hiking, etc.

But I thin that if you have any old cell phone they can always get out for an emergency call. Isn't that right" I have a drawer full of obsolete cell phones. I was thinking of using them as mp3 players.

Same here. I virtually always have my cell phone in my pocket. Very, very seldom is it even turned on. I carry it for emergencies.

I seldom make phone calls anyway. About the only calls I make are to my son in law, but that is very rare!

Maybe the fact that I have hearing aids is a contributing factor, but I just don't like talking on the phone. Or, maybe that I spent a fairly long career in positions that I had to spend a LOT of time on the phones in solving problems. Or, I just like my quiet time and privacy.

Works for me.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

I don't think I have a good opinion because I carry a work smartphone and a personal smartphone. So I almost always have two smartphones on me.

Any cell phone that works will call 911. That's just a given.

There are a number of different prepaid options if you want to look around. You can get an AT&T prepaid number and start with $50. Call customer service and ask them to extend it for a year. Call again in a year and add $10 and then ask them to extend it for another year.

Need to have AT&T service in your area and an unlocked GSM phone. Right now I have one in my iPhone SE which I leave in the car and I have another one in a Huawei Mate SE that I leave in my daughter’s car.

Just make sure to downgrade to the $0/month plan and never send pics or videos through their messaging app (required to use the service) and you won’t get billed for the upgraded service.

Yes, but be aware of a couple of things...

1) If you are not paying for service, you can call 911, but 911 cannot call you. If the line drops, you will need to call back and if you can’t you are screwed because...

2) On an unpaid phone, we cannot ask the carrier to “ping” the phone to try and determine a location. There is no longer a unique identifier for the phone so they cannot reach out to it for info.

Another stupid law passed with good intentions that created a nightmare for the phone companies and 911 PSAPs. We regularly get “jokesters” that will repeatedly call 911 from a no service phone and tie up call receivers for hours.

We have had as many 200+ calls from one phone in a 24 hour period. No way to disable it, no way to trace it. As far as I am concerned it is the biggest security issue the 911 system faces. Easily exploited, low cost, and pretty much impossible to defend against. Anyone wants to effectively disable any 911 system all you need is about 6 no service cellphones and the desire to fuck shit up.
