Hawaii soldier arrested for alleged ties to Islamic State

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
A Hawaii soldier has been arrested for alleged ties to the Islamic State terrorist group.

FBI special agents and SWAT arrested Ikaika Erik Kang, 34, on Saturday evening at his Waipahu apartment.

FBI spokesman Arnold Laanui said Kang is with the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks in Wahiawa.

The active duty soldier was arrested because of alleged connections to Islamic State, authorities told Hawaii News Now.

Officials said the suspect, who graduated from Kaiser High School, was the subject of a year-long investigation.

He's set to make his first appearance in federal court Monday afternoon.

It's bad enough I know this reference, but I also thought the exact same thing.

I'm kind of embarrassed by that. Big Grin

This HAS to be worthy of AT LEAST Sedition charges. Make an example out of this dirt bag!!!

If he was going to be charged under the UCMJ (evidently not), why not just Article 104, Aiding the Enemy?

“Any person who–
“(1) aids, or attempts to aid, the enemy with arms, ammunition, supplies, money, or other things; or
“(2) without proper authority, knowingly harbors or protects or gives intelligence to or communicates or corresponds with or holds any intercourse with the enemy, either directly or indirectly;
“shall suffer death or such other punishment as a court-martial or military commission may direct.”

I was surprised by your sedition suggestion and had to look it up in the UCMJ to be convinced that it could also apply. It just seems like the elements might be harder to prove based on what little we know about this case.

What the hell, a 2001 Kaiser High grad... middle /upper class neighborhood and what?? Radicalized, all this while serving in the US Army?...again just shows it can happen in our own back yard.

The school colors are blue & gold, and apparently he graduated with honors (see pic/link), shame he turned against his own people, and even worse while he's stationed at home...Schofield Barracks (Wahiawa). I'm sure his Dad & family are feeling it...small town still...everybody talks!

Nope according to Kang's lawyer its all the Army's fault, because they ignored his "mental illness". I'm glad they got him before he turned himself into an "active shooter" situation.

A couple things I noticed, that reminded me of the FT Hood Shooter:
Clearance pulled in 2012,but reinstated.

History of violent allegations that were dismissed as "harmless"

Had made Pro ISIS comments before.

Lost ATC certification.

Why was this soldier retained? I sat on separation boards for soldiers who threw up less warning signs.

Also, a GWOT Service medal only means you signed up during the conflict, he probably has a GWOT Service Expeditionary medal from deployment, but I don't see why the news chose to share that he had a "participation medal" (No offense to anyone).

I'm also wondering how extensively "combat trained" an ATC is?

I'm just glad they final grabbed him before he hurt someone.
