Would anyone know what the name of this plant & flower is? It was originally from the gulf coast of Mexico but is now growing in Texas.

First one I ever saw was down in Belize in 1995. Always wanted one here in the states. I'll start looking for them now.

On one of our cruises 4-5 years ago we did a shore excursion in Mexico and a very small seedling somehow got mixed in with some of the white beach sand and followed me home. I had no idea what it was other then the few inches of greenery so I potted it up. Figured if it was evasive or something that was going to eat me at night keeping it on the front porch and potted would control it. Think it was the second or third year it put the one flower posted above on. Had none last year but this year I had 15 or more flowers from just two shoots then it went to seed and the seeds are huge. From 3/4" to 1 1/4" long and 1/2" to 3/4" OD. Have 12 seeds to plant this spring. I've always wintered it in the shop but it looks like they are hardy for my zone. Will try starters from the seeds then plant them if I can get them going.

Bump with an update; Well spring garden planting is here for me and I've planted the seeds in several different areas to see where it will do the best. 3-4 of the seeds had sprouts growing out of them from being stored in a brown paper bag in my garden seeds tote.

Huh. I’ve got something like that..Peruvian lily. Probably the same thing, but mine’s a bulb. I potted it up and every spring it grows and blooms, then every fall I put the whole pot in the basement and ignore it til spring, when it starts growing again. One of the easiest outdoor plants I own. __________________________ "Trust, but verify."

Yearly update on the white spider lily. Six of the plants started from seeds are doing well and are getting established. The main plants that are potted haven’t flowered yet this year and probably won't as it hasn't been as hot this year.

I don’t know much about plants in general, and even less about that particular one, but a couple of observations. It’s invasive, as in invasion, not “evasive” species that have caused so many problems all over the planet. That much I do know because there have been so many horrible examples of what they do when introduced into local environments. And every invasive species that has been deliberately introduced by the humans responsible was coupled with either a belief that doing so couldn’t possible cause any harm, or more commonly without any thought at all. The “can’t cause any harm” belief was either due to ignorance or the assumption that the plant or animal would be contained and controlled. Well, they weren’t. I have no idea whether this plant could cause any environmental problems if allowed to spread, but if it did, it wouldn’t be the first. If you don’t like dandelions in your yard, thank the European migrants who brought them to the Americas from Eurasia. I’m not, BTW, trying to beat anyone up over this. The problems with invasive species usually occur when they are transported across ocean expanses. If they’re on a large contiguous land mass they will spread naturally as the climate and environment change and permit. It’s important, though, to understand how some of our environmental problems have originated. “I can’t give you brains, but I can give you a diploma.” — The Wizard of Oz This life is a drill. It is only a drill. If it had been a real life, you would have been given instructions about where to go and what to do.

It looks very similar to the Rocky Shoals Spider Lily. One of our local SC state parks has a huge population of these growing in the shoals of the Catawba River. Very beautiful to see from a canoe in the spring. Landsford Canal State Park Rocky Shoals Spider Lilies. "Prepared in mind and resources"

I’m pretty sure I have the same plant. Every fall I put the pot in the basement over winter and pull it out in the spring when leaves start popping up. We are going on over 15 years now, I think. You’ll enjoy it. Super easy. __________________________ "Trust, but verify."
