I don't have a logical, technology-based reason, but I just don't like Subarus.

Grandson had a WRX and it WAS a blast to drive, but the sound of that boxer 4 just grates on me.

C5 Corvette, still relatively easy to work on vs. C6/7, prices have dropped considerably and easiest entry exit. The coupe versions will pack enough luggage for a 2 week trip including golf clubs if you play pasture pool. Many Corvettes are owned by those of us of a certain age and have been used as grand touring cars.

Yup, the right Vette would certainly work.

There's a 2000 with a 6 speed out there for $14K which would be doable with an $8K down payment.

S2000s have begun to climb in value recently.

An older MR-2 turbo would be cool but mid engine is probably not easy to work on and the good looking body style is really getting up there in age. They look incredible though. I missed out on one just like this in my home town last year. Still kicking myself for it.

I have owned many of the cars suggested at one point or another and many of them will be over the posted budget for a good example. I would recommend a nice low mileage NA Miata. They are somewhat hard to find for a good price in really nice shape because people are buying them and flipping them, but if you can find a good one, you can basically drive it for free since they are appreciating. Insurance, taxes and maintenance is dirt cheap. You can get a hardtop too, which I would recommend. Here is mine.

I disagree. Mileage might be a little high but they are out there, but it will take time to find a decent one at that price, especially in a manual.

If the OP wants an auto around that price, they are plentiful.

The C5 was my first thought as it fits the bill. WRX if he was a boy racer millenial.

I’m not saying they aren’t out there. I’m saying he’ll get a ragged out high mileage vette. Which is basically what you just stated. And he doesn’t want an auto, according to the op.

You and I are about the same size. I am likely a bit older, but have the same type of issues back, hips, knees, ect. In short not as bendy as I once was. I love driving a fast sports car, but for anything other than a short tip to the store it would be a killer for me. My ideal would be a 50s to 60s pickup. Best to find one that has an older restoration, but needs a good paint job now. Not fast (could be with right engine and trans) and not real sporty, but I could drive it all day and enjoy it. No moaning and crying trying to get out of it.Smile

The $8000 limit was for a cash deal. I'd do a small payment for the right car. As I posted above, I could get into a C5 with an $8000 down payment and reasonable payments for 48 months.

Stopped to chat with a neighbor. He house sits for Big Money Lady that's waiting on retirement to move up here from Michigan. He got his key and let me into the garage to show me her '50 Ford F1. Flathead 6 and 3 on the tree. Doesn't know if it's for sale or not, but will ask.

Having owned 2 NB Miatas and now a 2006 S2000, I loved them all but my S2000 stands out as exceptional. Yes they are going up in value but the right deal is probably out there. The newest one would be a 2009.

True, but finding one that hasn't had the living shit beat out of it in my price range would be a miracle.

Early C5. Paul, you’re in Maine. I find that hard to believe. Most old guys don’t drive them hard and we store them in the winter. Mine was originally owned by a retired engineer who I know and is older than me. The car was babied and I do the same. Don’t think it’s ever seen WOT and I know it’s never seen salt or snow. You just gotta look.

I am not sure when you bought your S2000, but nice AP2s are approaching $20k now. Sure, you can get a ragged out, salvage title, needs work car for much less, but in the long run you will end up spending just as much if not more and have little to show for it at resale time.I am still kicking myself for selling the 02 that I bought new for $12,000 back in 09.

A 'Stang is on the short list, but I'd have to rent one or something first. I suspect comfort might be an issue, they're pretty small.

Never been attracted to ragtops.
I'm 5' 9" and weigh 260 pounds. I'm driving my 4th Mustang (2006 GT) and have a right knee that does not bend fully. I think you'd fit a Mustang pretty well.

The 1960s Mustangs have pretty good leg room, and the 289 V-8 versions are pretty peppy and corner well.

Check out Alex's video's on his Corvette. They're pretty entertaining.
