Thinking of running for my HOA board
Have you thoroughly read the rule, by-laws, covenants of the HOA?

Do this, find out what the board is allowed to do, and how it's supposed to be done, fines, how the board is structured. You might find out your neighbor delivering by hand isn't allowed, might require it to be mailed.

Check out the state laws on HOA's, learn what IN allows and doesn't, and what department enforces said laws.

Get informed, and informed is armed.

Attend meetings, learn the protocol, there should be a portion for opening, reading last minutes, discussing any actions necessary, finances and then an open session for questions and answers.

What I found was people just want to interject at any time when something comes up that hits their brain. So take a pad and pencil and write down questions so you don't interfere with the board actual duties.

This will prep you for being a board member that understands the workings.

As for the President stuffing notices in your mailbox, I would presume he's doing that to anyone that gets a notice. You should bring that up, not to attack him, but to inform the board that the post office frowns on putting non postmarked mail in the box, tell them the postman told you it was a violation when you asked and that the board should reconsider hand delivering mail into a Federal Post Box. This way you put the board on notice, and it should be recorded in the minutes.

I've served as President on our HOA for 8 years, and I'm back on until January at the request of the board to fill a position when a board member just moved out of state. In 30 years we've not had a problem with a board member, the board being out of control, or problems with residents.

The HOA is one of the reasons or neighborhood has a reputation of being fair and active in keeping the place up. It exceeds growth values of others around us consistently. We have had 4 houses go up for sale in the past three months. 3 of them sold within a week of being listed for full price, homes rarely go up for sale, and when they do they sell fast.

Get on it, get him off the board, I'll bet if you talk with other members before about him you might find he's a bully at the meetings and some may want off. You'll also find out when the next election is and how to get on the ballot...

HOA's are not by nature problematic, and in many cases, protect homeowner values if run correctly.

It is a thankless job, but someone has to do it.

Read the bylaws and state and local laws.

A lot of those petty tyrants are often running roughshod over the law and no one calls them to task.

Good luck if you decide to run.

I happen to be President of our POA. I am just curious why does the fact that a notice from the HOA in your mailbox without a stamp seem to be such a triggering issue. If the guy is the president and the notice is an official notice from the HOA why does the fact that he walked across the street and placed it in your mailbox and saved the association a little money a issue. Not debating if the notice itself is justified or not just curious why the outcry about not sticking a stamp on it. Violation notices are not sent certified. It comes from the same person and ends up in the same box and eventually in the same hands???
