As crazy as I am about tech, I've always preferred to read books the old fashion way. Well, I decided to see if I was missing something and just ordered my first E-Book. And if it matters, it was purchased from the Google Play Store.

So what E-Reader program does everyone use or would recommend?

I'd prefer a free option since I'm not sure this E-Reading thing is my cup of tea yet.

Since you already ordered it from the Play Store,it appears you should download the Adobe Digital Editions app. I think it's free.

I looked at that app when I ordered my book. It got such horrible ratings across the board, I opted to post my question here to try and see if there was a better option.

Google Play Books is a free app.

Just a suggestion in the event you decide e-books work for you; Hoopla is a free service offered by your public library that allows you to borrow eBooks, audiobooks, comics, movies, and TV on a web browser, phone, or tablet.

You would need a library card in addition to your public library supporting Hoopla. It is all free and allows you to check out up to five titles a month.

I use Calibre on a couple of Macs to manage my library, and Aldiko on Android tablets (and a Fire sorta-Android tablet) for on-the-go reading. I can recommend both of these free applications.

Calibre implements a network server to which Aldiko can attach so as to individually access books stored where there is more space available. Calibre will also convert formats (e.g. text, PDF, etc.) to those appropriate for reader devices (e.g. EPUB, MOBI, etc.). Currently maintain just over 1100 "books" in my Calibre library. Books is in quotes because a substantial percentage are things like software manuals/documentation and training guides rather than digital objects commonly regarded as books.

For those seeking a reader device, I find my older "real Android" tablet superior to the Fire for this purpose as the versions of apps from the Google Play Store are usually more refined than their versions on the Amazon store (without a fair amount of hackish activity, the Fire is locked out of the Play Store). Although the ad-subsidized price of the Fire is attractive, I'm not sure I'd buy it again.

Since you already used the google play store use google play books. Free app and when you sign in it will load up all books you have gotten from the google play store.

It is what I use across all my devices and have been pretty happy with it.

Play with text size and screen backlight options to find the combination that works best for you. Don't look at the default and give up on it.

Not sure if you have a device yet, or if you just plan on reading on a laptop or tablet, but if you do go full on ebook I suggest a kindle paperwhite. For me it is the easiest on the eyes, batteries last a very very long time, and it travels everywhere. I use the kindle unlimited, 10 bucks a month, for a big selection along with the free programs as mentioned.

I just upgraded my Kindle Paperwhite to the newest iteration. I have read over 200 books on my last Paperwhite and like the versatility to read in direct sun, in bed at night and in any other condition. I saved my old one as a backup.

This is my ‘most used’ electronic device.

I do most of my reading while traveling (airplanes, hotel rooms, etc.). What I like to do is download eBooks from my library. There are several apps that enable me to do this: Overdrive, Hoopla, and now Libby. Of course, one needs a library account...

Otherwise, I like Apple's Books app and the Amazon Kindle app. I use an iPad primarily, because it's easier on the eyes than having to squint using a phone.

I have the original Kindle Paperwhite (old!), and have used it virtually every day since purchasing it.

It’s great, but I’d like to buy a new one – better resolution and contrast. I’ve been holding out for a Paperwhite with a USB-C connector instead of the lousy micro-USB, but I’m losing hope for that.

My Kindle doesn’t have the built-in Internet connection, but no problem for me. I download e-books to my Mac, then transfer them to my Kindle via USB.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tablet I was going to use to read this first E-Book. Again, I'm not sure this digital reading thing is going to be the future for me (i.e. over paper books), so I'd prefer not to acquire any new hardware (i.e. Kindle's) just yet.

Amazon has the 7th Generation Paperwhite for $80 today. This is one gen behind the current reader

Amazon's Paperwhite e-readers are alleged to be the best, from what I understand.

I've just been using the Kindle app on my iPad and iPhone. Works well enough, but I'm not trying to read in the bright sunlight, either.

I use Kindle on a tablet. But Amazon's paperwhite is a better device for reading. The screen is so nice for reading. Battery life is incredible. However, I don't want two tablet-ey gadgets.

I was referring to Internet via built-in cellular. I don’t think my ancient Paperwhite has WiFi either, but USB suits me fine.

Early on I used the Adobe crap on an iPad. It downloads books from the library in ePub format. Best thing I ever did was switch to a Kindle Paperwhite. The first thing I noticed was when I switched my choice of reader on the library site from ePub to Kindle book, there were quite a lot of more selections available.
