Yessir, it was/is. As the Tour NCO it was my task to spot, identify and record on a mini tape recorder any of the 'rare bird's we might encounter, particularly those temporarily perched on what may or may not have been military vehicles of some kind,noting any special identifying features and activity, and to assist the tour officer - who was taking thousands of photographs - in the back of the car with any special activity he might get usinvolved in. The driver, being the driver, usually got to see things first, whatever they might be.

You can read about what we did in two books - 'Beyond the Front Line' by Tony Gerraghty, and 'The last mission' by Steve Gibson. You can also see stuff on Youtube, like a tour NCO calling out a lot of military equipment on a troop train, whilst paying particular attention to any of the rarer species of birds that may have been hitching a ride.
