My old electric chain saw sharpener fell off the bench and smashed up the on-off button. I am hoping to re-wire the thing just using an off-on toggle switch. Hey..it might work.

Picture one shows the top of the base of the broken switch. The two poles at the top relate to the off position of the switch.


This picture shows the bottom of that base. The two plugs in the center are for the "on" position of the switch.


This picture is the guts of the tool. As you can see the plug itself carries the two wires that plug into the plugs in the center of the base. The two top wires run back to the plugs on the base which would be off for the switch. The two bottom wires run to the two plugs for the "on" position.


Am I dreaming or can all of this be wired into a two pole toggle switch as I had hoped?? Or should just shoot it.

Are there any numbers on the broken switch?
You might be able to just buy a replacement.

If no identifiers, you can search for something close in dimension and function.

Maybe something like this.

The way it is wired it is almost certainly just a double pole single throw (DPST) on/off switch.

If you buy a replacement with 1/4" spade terminals you won't even need to do any wiring, you can just plug it in.

If you look somewhere with a good selection like Mouser or Digikey, you can probably find a switch with the same size housing.

Good advice. We really don't have much of a choice around here for specialty parts but that link Patrick provided just might do the trick.

Automotive stores also generally have a selection of heavy duty electrical switches with spade connectors.

Mouser and Digikey are two of the largest online electronic parts suppliers. The only problem with their selection is having to find the right one out of the thousands they have!

Thanks again for the replies. I will check with O'Reillys tomorrow and dig a little on line. You guys are right, I should be able to find that same switch instead of gerry rigging something up. That Amazon link still looks promising.

I'm wondering if you can call or email the equipment manufacturer, give them model number etc, and ask if they have one to send to you?

I can't make out the manufacturer by the pics.

The auto parts store is good for this, and Lowes has a selection of specialty switches too.
