David McCallum Dies: Beloved ‘NCIS’ Actor Was 90
Sad to hear. I loved him in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Also in NCIS. RIP.

He certainly seemed like a good guy. Enjoyed his role on NCIS. I remember an episode that had a flashback, with a young actor playing the young Ducky. My wife said “that doesn’t look like him”. I had to find photos from The Man from U.N.C.L.E. to show her that the young actor looked remarkably like a young David McCallum.

His Wikipedia entry has this in it. I was curious why the family requested donations to the Marine Corps Scholarship Fund:

quote:

In 1967, McCallum married Katherine Carpenter. They had a son, Peter, and a daughter, Sophie. McCallum and his wife were active in charitable organisations that support the United States Marine Corps: Katherine's father was a Marine who served in the Battle of Iwo Jima and her brother was killed in the Vietnam War . On 27 August 1999, McCallum was naturalized as a United States citizen.[

I had been thinking about him and his career on NCIS recently; had been watching a number of NCIS episodes on various channels recently and really enjoyed his performance/character; as mentioned above, a true professional and scene stealer! I also read he was a great mentor to some of the less experienced actors on the series.
Ironic that he would die on the day CBS was doing a NCIS 20th anniversary tribute (and he was the only character still on that series who was an original cast member). He had a good long life run lasting till 90; kept his mind and was active doing what he enjoyed to the end, had the company of his family, spouse and friends; one really can't ask for more than that in life...

Some station that is running NCIS episodes should put together a days worth of his best episodes.

Can't say I ever watched NCIS, so I don't know about his character on that show, but I sure enjoyed Man From U.N.C.L.E. as a kid!

NCIS had a very nice sendoff episode for Ducky last night complete with a nice little cameo at the very end.

I’d say one of the most well done NCIS episodes ever in the series and a fitting honor for David McCallum.

While it was cool to see the cameo, it was disappointing that it was not who it should have been.

There is no good reason that Gibbs and all of the prior crew weren't there for a final sendoff funeral. Frown

I thought it was a very well done tribute episode and thought Tony coming back at the end was a very nice touch. The clips pf Ducky were good ones and I think Brian Dietzen did a fine job of writing and also portraying Jimmy's grief.
I, too, would have liked a few more of the previous cast members to show up, but realize that probably would not happen.

I thought that Mark Harmon has made it very clear that he doesn’t intend on ever coming back to the show?

Frankly, I’m glad he’s gone, the last couple of years he was on he was ugly/nasty and bitter and was not the Gibbs of old. I think the show was just getting to Harmon and it was coming out in his character.

Personally, I thought it was a weak sendoff for a very fine actor, one of the few true anchors in a show that started great and is ending poorly.

David McCallum, you deserved better!

Big time agree. Kate and Director Shepherd both received fantastic send offs and both in 2 parts if I remember correctly.

Kate led into the introduction of Ziva and arch-enemy Ari, while Jenny’s brought us Leon Vance and a relatively entertaining temporary split of the team…the tech geeks calling McGee “Boss” in front of Gibbs had me laughing out loud.

I’m good with the one show send off. The ones who left the show were actually alive. It would be macabre to stretch two episodes off a dead guy. It’d be a real life weekend at Bernie’s.

I think the writers did a decent send off, even having a case wrapped around his death. Good touch with showing a weird floral wreath in the lab and making a reference to Abbey. Denoso showing up wasn’t needed but it was a nice touch.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
