Outgoing President Joe Biden is commuting the sentences of 1,500 people and pardoning 39 others in the biggest ever single-day act of clemency in the US.
The names of the people involved have not been given but the pardons are for those convicted of non-violent crimes.
The commutations on Thursday were announced for those who were placed on home confinement during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Biden said these people would have received shorter sentences if charged under today's laws, policies, and practices.
The pardons come over a week after the president was criticized for pardoning his own son Hunter from his federal crimes.
Officials said last week that the White House was listening to demands for Biden to extend the same grace to thousands of people wronged by the U.S. judicial system.
Sources had told Reuters last week that the pardons that were being discussed were said to include those convicted of nonviolent drug offenses and people identified by civil rights groups as unjustly incarcerated.
Biden said he would be taking more steps in the weeks ahead and would continue to review clemency petitions.
The second largest single-day act of clemency was by Barack Obama, with 330, shortly before leaving office in 2017.

When asked why so many DementiaJoe replied "He had no idea Hunter had so many kids, ex-wives, etc. Really adds up quick, don't it?" said DementiaJoe. Thank God for autopens."

Why would Hillary be concerned about this, why would Bill be seeking a pardon for her to avoid Trumps DOJ, didn't they claim they had nothing to hide, other than the 30,000 emails deleted, scrubbed servers, fake reports on Russia Russia Russia,
Guess Bill and Hillary admitting they did things that were illegal and need protection by asking for the pardon...
For a fraction of what we sent to Ukraine for their security we could have had true border security, in whatever effective form was necessary.
But rather than letting the incoming administration address things how they deem best, Biden is doing his level best to make sure Trump spends lots of money and then the Dems will argue about cost.
Taking the border wall material and putting it up for auction is a chickenshit move.

That is an asshole move.
Trump ought to send a guy to buy it back at scrap price. It's only half a mile. Then sell it to the gov. to use at retail & put the difference back into the US coffers. Biden wants to be a dick, we can dick back.
I'd bet it's certified material. I doubt the government buys anything without CMTRs (certified material test reports).

Chickenshit or asshole move... this REALLY frosts me. This is just so "In your face!" not just to Trump but to the majority of the American people.
Biden Admin Scrambling To Auction Off Border-Wall Sections Before Trump Takes Office
With Donald Trump set to retake office in January, the Biden administration is scrambling to auction off unused sections of Trump's border wall, the Daily Wire reports. According to an anonymous US Customs and Border Patrol agent, wall sections are being removed from key areas such as Tucson, Arizona - a notorious hotspot for illegal border crossings.
"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown

Word has it that the state of Texas is very interested in buying some discount border wall.
Guess we won't really know until the auctions end.

I think "administration" is the key word there. As has been mentioned, Biden isn't doing this (hell, the man doesn't know which socks to put on). No, this is most likely that smug traitorous asshole, who should be twitching at the end of a rope, Mayorkas, or some other of Bathhouse Barry's tools.

Yeah, I know... but it's that whole "unified executive branch" thing. The President IS the executive branch of government.
The Unitary Executive Theory (UET) is a Constitutional law theory that states the President of the United States possesses sole authority over the Executive Branch. UET supporters believe the theory originated during the Constitutional Convention of 1787 in the Virginia Plan.

I know it’s legal and stands up in court and what not, but I find it hard to believe ole Joe is furiously reading and signing thousands of pardons and commutations.
“Joe” did give ANY pardons or commutations beyond Hunter. It is the unknown and unelected handlers pushing all the paper with the auto-pen doing the heavy lifting. I’d bet my pension that Joe don’t know dick about more than a dozen or so of those receiving dispensation.
It’s all about what kick back or benefit some dude behind the curtain can get for giving whomever a pass. Absolutely corruption to the very end.

Ran across this press conference recording of the Democrat governor of Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro blasting Biden for one of his pardons. I was ignorant of the “Kids for Cash” scandal that rocked Pennsylvania. Here is a synopsis of what it involved.
quote:
The kids for cash scandal centered on judicial kickbacks to two judges at the Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, US. In 2008, judges Michael Conahan and Mark Ciavarella were convicted of accepting money in return for imposing harsh adjudications on juveniles to increase occupancy at a private prison operated by PA Child Care.
Ciavarella disposed thousands of children to extended stays in youth centers for offenses as trivial as mocking an assistant principal on Myspace or trespassing in a vacant building. After a judge rejected an initial plea agreement in 2009, a federal grand jury returned a 48-count indictment. In 2010, Conahan pleaded guilty to one count of racketeering conspiracy and was sentenced to 17.5 years in federal prison. Ciavarella opted to go to trial the following year. He was convicted on 12 of 39 counts and sentenced to 28 years in federal prison. Conahan's sentence was commuted in 2024 by President Joe Biden.
In the wake of the scandal, the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania overturned hundreds of adjudications of delinquency in Luzerne County. The Juvenile Law Center filed a class action lawsuit against the judges and numerous other parties, and the Pennsylvania state legislature created a commission to investigate juvenile justice problems in the county.
