The thing is, he got the applause! Everybody was watching; he stumbled; there was a gasp to see if this was the big one; it wasn't which surprised Joe and the crowd, so they all cheered and clapped. In other words, if he can move himself from one spot to another without falling down, his crowd will cheer!
