Apparently they're doing some good research up in Maryland on a new technique to treat wood that shows great promise. They say you can shape or mold the wood pre-treatment, then treat and it is as strong as titanium but much lighter.

Looks fascinating and promising. Seems like the material would still be relatively thick compared to steel or titanium...the article didn't give any example dimensions, just said 5x thinner.

If it is as strong as titanium (but lighter) at the same thickness...that is something!

I don't know about "as strong as metal", but when traveling in China it was pretty unnerving to see large commercial skscrapers under construction and see that all the scaffolding for the laborers was bamboo poles lashed together.
I guess it works! ....But also I think they don't really stop or get concerned if they lose a few during the projects.

They were claiming it 60 or so years ago. Balsa wood was the subject, with no extra treatment. And silk thread was stronger than a lot of things.
