You can always start to disassemble and clean that 1911 right at the table. No, no just kidding. Sounds like this young man has a touch of class and observes tradition.

Nah, he ain't looking for permission to marry her. He is gonna ask about the dowry amount. (He also will probably want to see your personal will at the same time.)

At least you will know that he has a financial plan for their future!

If so, aside from the texting, which is what they do now a days, good on him. I he a known POS? Hopefully he doesn't sport a man bun

I like the idea of wearing your BBQ gun to this meet

We’re meeting in Brooklyn, so ANY kind of carry is out.

He’s very sports-oriented and plays organized baseball with his brother(s), IIRC. Not a soy boy, thank goodness. My daughter doesn’t go for that type.

Meeting in Brooklyn is EXACTLY when/where you need to bring a friend. Especially anymore... This from a former Brooklyn boy. I hope all goes well!

Best regards,
Nick.

Congratulations. He sounds like a good guy aside of the politics. If he’s good to her, that’s mostly all that matters.

Very curious as to how this played out…

“I’m sure you’re aware that I’m in love with your daughter. It would mean a lot to me to get your blessing on our marriage.”

“She is the best thing that’s happened in my life.”

Of course, I said “yes.”

We smoked Padron Anniversary 1926 toros. Followed by a Davidoff Connecticut Shade for him and a strange new vitola of the Olivia Series V for me.

No whiskey at this particular cigar lounge. He had coffee, I had Diet Coke. He is a die-hard Giants fan and we watched the Giants die hard.

Apparently, I am the last family member to know about this intended marriage. My daughter’s mother (my ex-wife), my other child and most of her cousins already had the news. Apparently, there has been a group discussion about the custom ring and it has been ordered from a jeweler in Colorado. (I would have mentioned David Truong had I known!)

They plan to get married in 2023. No date set as yet.

My daughter explained that the engagement isn’t “official” just yet… my acceptance is an asynchronous step toward the bona fide engagement.

Kids these days…

Best wishes to the couple! He did it the "right way" even if it was the worst-kept secret in the family.

Or a choreographed, staged, filmed and edited "surprise" proposal in a romantic location.

Congrats to the OP.

I would suggest that you tell him that he has to shoot 25 straight in American Skeet before the wedding. BTW, gaining the skill to hit a small target moving at 30-80 mph will turn him into a hard core gun nut.

I've stopped counting.

I'm in your camp.

He's living with her, so he isn't respecting her.
You've already been tipped off that he's a liberal.

You get one opportunity to speak your mind, then you love and support to the best of your ability. You really on get this one chance to speak reason. Since you've asked... my advice is to spend the time to work on how to articulate it in the most logical and graceful way possible...that unequally yoked in a family doesn't end well.

Congrats! Kind of old school, almost formal, and classy. Of course it was a done deal, and you were the last to know - that's family - but still a nice gesture.
