I should have paid more attention to the new "pretty boy" barber, but I figured I was just being old, and to not worry about it. (As a relevant aside, I am quite blind, without my glasses.)

He didn't speak English (Cuban refugee), but the old Cuban barber there is excellent, so I got my usual haircut instructions translated and ignored the actions of Pretty Boy (PB).

Everything seems normal, until the end, when PB sprays some kind of hairspray, very carefully - Usually, I don't get any such product, but I figure it's not worth the hassle of trying to explain it - the barbershop is in my building, and I'll just shower it out...

At the end of the haircut, he's bouncing up and down like a young retriever, saying "good job, good job, yes?", and I figure my hair is just an odd color, due to light, or something...

Then, I touch my hair, and my fingers are stained a strange brown color...

Apparently, my hair got sprayed with some kind of Guiliani-approved substance.

Anyone who looks at me is going to immediately notice that I am not young, and that I am not pretty.

(Somehow, there's a lovely woman, who seems to think I'm handsome, and worth putting up with, and I have no idea what's wrong with her eyesight, but I'm not about to take her to any eye doctors any time soon.)

So now, I'm middle-aged, paunchy, baggy-eyed, with a painted scalp...

And not even a fun painted scalp - I mean, if it was purple or something I could go find a rave or punk rock show to go to.

Probably should have jumped straight in the shower, but I found it kind of hilarious. Hopefully this stuff comes off with shampoo, otherwise, I will be returning for suggestions...

(Good news, it washed out.)

I miss being strong, and fast, and having functional joints. I miss having a physique which wasn't shaped by years of sitting at a computer screen, meeting table, and business dinner table...

But I have never given a damn about my hair.

Are there really men who are so emotionally affected by their hair loss, that they spray paint their heads?

Yep. Men are insecure about a lot of things.

Already told my wife that if/when it goes gray (I'm 37, so probably have a while), it is what it is.

My dad is 60 & is about 50/50, his oldest brother is 66 (I think) & last I saw him, still had little to no gray at all.
Both have pretty full hair, so I'm not overly worried about the thinning/balding part. But, again, just don't really care. If it happens, it happens.

There was a movie called The Fabulous Baker Boys that had a scene about that hair stuff. I never saw the movie but I remember it from advertisements.

My hair was thinning so I started shaving my hair last December. I wish I would have done it earlier. I’ve already saved $300 in haircuts (the lady that used to do my hair was going through breast cancer so I always gave her a good tip since I know she can’t cut as much).

Not gonna lie, I freaking hate it. I'm 53 so I should be okay, but as my wife says, I'm difficult.

Had a head full of brown hair until about 10 years ago. Now white on the temples and sideburns and so thin on the top that I still have hair but you can see the roundness of my fat head. Drives me bat$h!t crazy. My dad was ripped, 30" waist, and a head full of brown hair. I got screwed!

I admit, I shouldn't worry about it. The problem is definitely all me. Wink

Oh yes.

I previously had dealings with one guy in particular who sprayed his thinning gray hair with something like that.

When he sweated (as he almost always was), it would run in little brown rivulets down his cheeks, forehead, and neck, and stain the collars of all his shirts with brown spots.

Not only was he not fooling anyone, but was actually making himself look worse in the process.

Much like a combover.

Some care, some don't.
I'm lucky I have a full head of hair, and the grey is just starting to show. I've been accused of dying my hair multiple times. Im not that vain.
I'm growing it out now. One of these days, one of my bosses might say something. I'll cut it off.
When I say "I'll cut it off" I'll shave my dome bald.
It might grow back.
It's might not...

I've been bald before.

I had a boss years ago- Luciano. What a goof. This nit-wit used to dye his hair black with some shit... It was laughable when he sweats. Black streaks all down his face. But that was probably one of his better qualities.

I know guys with implants. I guess they care.
"Just for men". I guess they care too.

Me- meh...

I'm bald on top and gray-to-white everywhere else. I don't really GAF.

Apparently it really, really bothers some men.

Poor souls.

I’m not happy about the thinning and receding. I made peace with the graying when it became too much of a hassle to yank out. No coloring. No dye job. No implants. I’m almost 50 so I suppose it’s about time. I’m a bit vain. I have no problem admitting it. I want to look good. 24 isn’t coming back though. I’m going with distinguished gentleman instead of old man.

First white hair I found in my beard in my late 20's bothered me a little. It went from a number to a percentage, and it's probably mostly white now at 40. The hair line going back bothered me a bit more than that. I decided to de-fang the snake and just went ahead and shaved my head for a few years to get used to the idea, and yes I mean slick. Decided I didn't care one way or another and let it grow out to the short fade I keep it at. Hairline thankfully hasn't gone anywhere in a while.

I grew up in a time where it wasn't uncommon to still see men wearing toupees, and even in recent years, I've seen some guys with a doll hair halo from when they got implants as the hairline was starting to move back... and then rapidly proceeded to the back of their heads, leaving a strip of hair by itself. I decided none of those was a particularly smooth look, and attracted attention they wouldn't have received otherwise. If and when I start to bald in earnest, I'll do it as gracefully as I can and just shave my head again. It's the right move, I'd argue, for any man who's losing it. The white patches I'm getting now don't bother me at all. If someone sprayed my hair with color, I wouldn't be happy.

Even if he didn't speak English, I can't believe he would spray something like that in your hair without knowing you wanted it.

Echoing an earlier post, oh, yes. I have seen everything from comb-overs that blow over and fall to one side in a stiff breeze, to ill-fitting hairpieces, to bad dye jobs. All these attempts to hide it look worse than simply being bald or grey. Not to mention spending thousands of dollars on implants.

I don't personally have a balding problem, but I'm in my 60s and it is getting grey. Doesn't bother me a bit.

I started losing my hair pretty early-in my early 30s. If any of my male friends or family said anything about it I'd reply that it was male pattern baldness caused by hormones, and if they had more male hormones they'd be losing their hair too.

Most men are going to lose their hair-it's only a question of whether you do so gracefully, or go the stupid comb-over or toupe route. Nothing against a guy that wants to use a good toupe-just not for me.

My gray has been in a race with the thinning for years, so far it's about a draw.
