I guess it is because I am now an official "Old Fart" having just cleared my 75th but for some reason seeing these television "personalities" wearing a suit or sports jacket and slacks with the white soled bright colored tennis shoes goes against my grain. I'm sure it is just the fashion of the times but seems like they could choose more fitting shoes to wear while dressed up. For some reason it just doesn't look right to me. A pair of loafers or boat shoes with the jacket and slacks or leather shoes with a suit seems to be more fitting.

My elderly mother tried then got rid of the internet, they have no use for it.

My son is slightly perplexed that I have never owned a torque wrench. I have nothing against them, just tell him you have to consider the fastener you are dealing with.

I realize now 1/2 of you don’t want me changing your flat tire, ok by me.

No comment on the fashion choices (Hard to imagine anyone less qualified than me...) but welcome to the International Brotherhood of Curmudgeonly Old Farts (IBCOF).

Doing motorcycle work and snugging up aluminum fasteners in aluminum castings, I use 'em. Don't know my own strength and a twisted off fastener is a MAJOR pain in the ass.

In fact, I now have several. Bought inch-pound and a foot-pound rated wrenches and have since got another in a Craigslist used box-and-tools deal, and inherited a fourth.

I do see the value with aluminum, I recently changed a plug in an ATV. It was rather tight in there, not sure room for ANY torque wrench.

Yeah, one of these days, my ‘feel’ may come up short.

When I worked in auto, truck and motorcycle dealers I had a standard answer I used for the “What do I torque this to?” crowd, the ones that wouldn’t walk over to the service department to ask as the service manuals were there or to search the Internet “Tighten until the fastener either breaks or the threads strip out. Then the next one tighten it to ten foot pounds less”.

Then once they had the perplexed look on their Face ID tell them “Internet or ask service, I don’t have that information.”

I'm in the club too and it's nice not having to worry about the latest fashions. Or needing to buy a matching helmet for your motorcycle, my helmets are all white so they match everything!

Re torque wrench I use them pretty often but never on oil drain plugs.

Some of the retired pro athletes will do the sneaker thing. But it's understandable because, in many cases, their feet are wrecked for years of sports.

As for a torque wrench, didn't know that was a new thing. If you do engine work, probably best to have a torque wrench. I know I did when I replaced the flywheel, clutch and pressure plate. I use a torque wrench on my wheels, too. I also have one of those battery powered impacts.

To the OP: Yes, Darker shoes for suits and slacks. I wear a size 16 and do not need to look like I am running around in my clown shoes. Nor do they.

To PHPaul: Your dues are too high. EVERYTHING costs too much! You should pay me to be part of your silly old club.

Dad said torque was what lifted your heels at the morning pee.

Don't forget the torque wrench on your AR barrels.

Fashion statement of decked out suits and not wearing socks.... Wearing ripped jeans (both male and female) that show more skin exposed than cloth covering skin which cost 3 to 4 times more for this fashion statement....... What happened back in the day if we even thought about wearing such clothing even around inside the house much less than out in public.....Do not get me started about the outrageous hair colorings....... drill sgt.

Not sure what the minimum age for admittance is, but I am no doubt an old curmudgeon on most everything these days! I am even learning to seriously hate my iPhone and wishing I could go back to an old-school flip-phone!

Is age 63 acceptable? How much are dues? Do I get a challenge coin with membership?

Pete Hegseth of Fox News, and possibly others, likes to wear that getup. I don't care for it either.

I'm 58, and grateful as hell that the rules around work shoes have changed. I don't wear white soles, but I damned sure wear black Salomon hiking shoes if I have to be on my feet for any period of time.

I remember black, leather soled shoes. Still have a pair. I owned Wright Arch Preserver, Allen Edmonds and Florsheim back in the day. Were they comfortable? Better than standing barefoot on concrete; yes. Better than a good pair of trainers? Hell no.

I am thrilled that ties, and hard shoes, have gone the way of the Dodo, unless absolutely required.

And I'm still a curmudgeon. GET OFF MY LAWN!!!
