Hard to beat an Edwin Jagger DE89L.

I like either Lord Platinum or Feathers for blades.

I’m a bit of a gear freak and consequently having moved back to old fashioned double edged shaving a couple of decades ago have a collection of razors - Muhle, Merkel and a couple of antique Gillettes.

However since I got a Feather stainless which I use with Feather blades it’s all I use.

Big fan of the Timeless razors. I tried several snd also prefer the weight of heavy razor. I have been using the matte stainless Pineapple handle for the past few years now.

I went back to DE shaving about 15 years ago. I started out with a Merkur 23C. I've bought a few new razors since then, but always go back to the 23C. It has a longer handle than normal razors, but I see that the 24C Merkur is even longer.

As for blades, I settled on Feather a long time ago.

I like mine too. I like how you just crank down on it and it's set. I don't have to worry about any "adjustments." Hasn't nicked me yet.

Is it correct that they have a mild and medium head? Which version are you guys using?
I don't mind "mild" but sometimes that's subjective. It would be nice to get one w/ both heads.

I had to check the website to see what you're talking about. There's three different kinds of heads. When I bought mine maybe three months ago, there weren't any options. I suppose that's good for me as I would be stymied as to which kind to order. I look at the technical details and I describe it as differences of a gnat's ass (.001") in terms of blade exposure. I suppose your skin can feel the difference.

quote:

The Mild Razor would be especially recommended for people with sensitive skin and have frequent complaints with skin irritation or ingrown hair.

The Medium Razor has slightly more blade exposure and a wider blade gap than the regular Henson AL13. This allows the medium to handle thicker and longer hair but requires more attention when shaving the sharper areas of your body.

Technical Details:
AL13 - Mild - .68 mm [.027”] Blade Gap and .033 mm [.0013"] Blade Exposure
AL13 - Medium - .85 mm [.033”] Blade Gap and .058 mm [.0023”] Blade Exposure
AL13 - Aggressive - .98 mm [.038”] Blade Gap and .09 mm [.0036"] Blade Exposure

Yep! Just ordered one.

I just picked up an AL13 mild and first impression was it's too light. I'm using a good quality brush and creme and so far I like my Leaf Twig better. I'll give it a few more tries with other blades but the Leaf feels much better and I get a closer shave with Merkur blades...

My Henson came last week & I've had a chance to shave with it a few times. It takes a shave or two to get used to it's lighter weight, but it does a good job. It's a well thought out design & it does seem to give a smoother shave than my Merkurs & Parker razors.

Some reviews say the Henson isn't very aggressive.

I have wiry stubble and sensitive skin so I generally hate shaving anyway. I currently use a multi head disposable.

I too use Henson and am happy with it. Mild works for me, and although I initially wanted a heavier handle, I settled on the Henson as a travelling razor and just like it enough to use it all the time.

You might try these guys for a heavier option, they have a good selection of heavy handles, and many in longer lengths. I have handled several of their units at local shops and they are very nicely finished.

Merkur "Barber Pole" (38C) razor. I tried the shorter models but did not care for them.

Feather blades.

If you like weight in your razor, look at the Merkur Futur series. I don’t know if it’s true with all Merkur razors, but it’s aggressive, I have mine dialed way down (the Futur is adjustable). I’ve kinda settled on German Wilkinson blades. Double-edged razor blades can be judged on two scales: sharpness and smoothness. The Feather is the undisputed king of sharp, a 10 on a 10 scale. I prefer a smooth shave and find that a blade somewhere in the middle between sharp and smooth works best for me. Don’t think you can’t cut yourself very well with a Wilkinson though.

I looked at the Henson, have a great reputation here. But I just couldn't part with that money and then pay $10 for shipping on top of that. I'll stick with what I have now
